Thomas More Sweeps Thiel and Clinches PAC Tournament Berth

(GREENVILLE, Pa.) - The Thomas More College softball team swept Thiel College today (Saturday, April 27, 2013) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Tomcat Park in Greenville, Pennsylvania.  The Saints won game one, 8-0, in five innings and the nightcap, 5-1.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 21-17 overall and 12-6 in the PAC as they earn a berth in in next week's PAC Championship Tournament in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.  Thomas More will be the fourth seed and will play top-seed and host Westminster College on Thursday (May 2, 2013) at a time to be announced later tonight on the PAC website.  The Tomcats end the season at 14-20 overall and 7-11 in the PAC.

In the first game of the day, the Saints scored one run in the first, four in the third and three in the fifth and held Thiel scoreless for the 8-0 five inning run-rule victory.

Junior pitcher Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) earned the when as she hurled a one-hit shutout and struck out seven.

At the plate, four Saints had multiple hits in the game as junior center fielder Ashley Fletcher (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) was two-for-four with two runs batted-in and a run scored, sophomore second baseman Hannah Curtis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) was two-for-two with a run scored, freshman left fielder Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) was two-for-three with a RBI and a run scored and sophomore designated player Jackie Raabe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-three with a RBI.

In the nightcap, Thomas More scored first in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead, but Thiel answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.  The Saints then scored two in the third and two in the fourth and held the Tomcats scoreless for the 5-1 victory.

Salzer earned the win in the circle as she pitched all seven innings and gave up one run (earned) on six hits and struck out one.

Salzer also led the team at the plate as she was two-for-three with two doubles and two runs scored.
