Box Score (GREENVILLE, Pa.) - Nine Saints scored today (Saturday, January 5, 2012) at the Thomas More College men's basketball team defeated Thiel College, 67-55, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints improve to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the PAC. With the loss, the Tomcats fall to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the PAC.
Thomas More jumped out to an early 21-7 lead with 13:26 to play in the first half when junior point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) made a three-pointer. Thiel answered with an 8-2 run capped by a R.J. Brownlee lay-up with 8:44 to play in the half to cut the lead to 23-15. The Saints responded with 7-0 run to increase the lead to 30-15 when Berlekamp made one-of-two free-throws with 3:48 to play in the half. The Tomcats closed out the half on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 32-23 at halftime when Marquis Jackson made a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Thiel opened the second half on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 34-29 with 17:35 to play in the game when Brownlee made a lay-up. Thomas More answered with a 24-11 run to extend the lead to 58-40 when sophomore shooting guard Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) made a lay-up with 6:21 to play in the game. The Tomcats put together a 7-0 run capped by a Kamran McCaskill lay-up with 2:40 to play in the game to cut the lead to 58-47. That would be as close as Thiel would come as Thomas More closed out the game on a 9-8 run for the 67-55 victory.
Two Saints finished in double-figure scoring as junior point guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) and senior shooting guard Ross Renken (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) both finished with 10 points. Senior shooting guard Ethan King (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) and junior power forward Josef Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) both just missed double-figure scoring with nine points each. Sophomore shooting guard Chris Richard (Louisville, Ky./Southern) led the team on the boards with seven rebounds and in steals with four, while Hayes led the team in assists with four.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday (January 9) when they host Westminster College at 7:30 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
