Box Score 2 (BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) - The Thomas More College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Geneva College today (Wednesday, April 25, 2012) at the Merriman Complex in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. The Saints won game one, 4-2, in nine innings and Geneva won game two, 10-2, in six innings.
With the split the Saints are now 22-16 overall and 9-7 on the PAC and the Golden Tornadoes are 26-16 overall and 10-6 in the PAC.
In the top of the ninth inning of game one sophomore shortstop Alex Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) had a two-run single to score the eventual game-winning runs. Freshman center fielder Cate Luck (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) and senior left fielder Angie Sandmann (Morrow, Ohio/Little Miami) each had a home run in the game.
In the circle, sophomore pitcher Sara Young (Okeana, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) earned the win as she pitched three shutout innings of relief and gave up only five hits, while striking out two. Sophomore Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) started and earned a no-decision as she pitched six inngs and gave up two runs (both earned) on eight hits and struck out seven.
In the nightcap, senior third baseman Brittany Wegman (West Harrison, Ind./East Central) hit a two-run home run to lead the offense.
Young suffered the loss as she pitched one and one-third innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on seven hits.
Thomas More closes out the 2012 regular season on Saturday (April 28) when it hosts Thiel College in a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m .at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
