Box Score 2 (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College softball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Bethany College today (Sunday, April 15, 2012) at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints won both games by the score of 4-3.
With the sweep, the Saints improve to 20-12 overall and 7-3 in the PAC, while the Bison fall to 6-20 overall and 3-7 in the PAC.
In game one, the teams entered the seventh inning tied at 3-3 as the Bethany scored one in the third and two in the fourth and Thomas More scored one in the second and two in the third. In the bottom of the seventh inning sophomore third baseman Alex Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) hit a two out walk-off base hit scoring sophomore catcher Stefaney Turner (Franklin, Ohio/Carlisle) for the 4-3 victory.
In the pitching circle, sophomore Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) started and got a no-decision as she pitched five innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on four hits and struck out eight. Sophomore Sara Young (Okeana, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) earned the win as she pitched two innings of relief and gave up two hits, while striking out one.
Burns led the Saints at the plate as she was two-for-three, while Walter was one-for-four with two runs batted-in.
In the nightcap, the Saints scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the third and one in the sixth and held Bethany to three runs in the seventh for the 4-3 victory.
Young earned the win in the pitching circle as she started and pitched four innings and gave up only one hit, while striking out one. Burns pitched three innings of relief and gave up three runs (all earned) on three hits and struck out four.
Senior first baseman Brittany Wegman (West Harrison, Ind./East Central) and sophomore right fielder Morgan Pennekamp (Cleves, Ohio/Seton) led the Saints at the plate as they each had a home run in the game.
Thomas More returns to the diamond on Wednesday (April 18) when it travels to Grove City, Pennsylvania for a PAC doubleheader with Grove City College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
