Box Score 2 (KISSIMMEE, Fla.) - The Thomas More College softball team swept two games today (Thursday, March 8, 2012) on the fourth day of the Rebel Spring Games at Oren Brown Field in Kissimmee, Florida. The Saints defeated Husson University, 6-1, in game one and Baldwin-Wallace College, 6-3, in the nightcap.
With the sweep, the Saints improve to 5-3 on the season.
In game one the Saints scored one run in the first, two in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth, while Husson scored its lone run of the game in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) earned the win as she pitched all seven innings giving up one run (earned) on two hits and striking out four.
The Saints were led at the plate by senior first baseman Brittany Wegman (West Harrison, Ind./East Central), who was two-for-three with two doubles and two runs batted-in and freshman shortstop Hannah Curtis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain), who was two-for-three with two runs scored.
In the second game of the day, the Baldwin-Wallace jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Saints rallied and plated four runs in the fourth and two in the seventh for the 6-3 victory.
Sophomore Sara Young (Okeana, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) earned the win in the pitching circle as she pitched seven innings giving up three runs (all earned) on eight hits and striking out one.
The Saints were led at the plate by senior left fielder Angie Sandmann (Morrow, Ohio/Little Miami), who was two-for-four with a two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Two other Saints had multiple hits in the game as Wegman was two-for-four with a double and two runs scored and sophomore designated player Morgan Pennekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) was two-for-four with three RBI.
Thomas More close out its Florida swing tomorrow (Friday, March 9) as it plays Emmanuel (Mass.) College at 9 a.m. and the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m. at the Fortune Road Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.
