Saints Fall to Hiram and Otterbein at Thomas More Invite

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College volleyball team fell, 3-2, to Hiram College and, 3-0, to Otterbein University today (Saturday, September 3, 2011) on the second day of the Thomas More Invitational at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the two losses, the Saints fall to 1-3 on the early season.

In the first match of the day, Hiram won by the scores of 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-12 and 19-17.  The Saints' offensive attack was led by freshman outside hitter Karsen Cronin (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) and senior middle blocker Katie Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), who had 17 and 10 kills respectively.  Senior setter Michelle Clifford (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) paced the offense with 31 assists, while junior setter Tori Verville (Edgewood, Ky./Holy Cross) added nine assists.  Four Saints had double-digit digs as freshman defensive specialist Kelsey Castiglioni (Harrison Township, Michigan/L'Anse Creuse) had 25, freshman defensive specialist Christina Brackett (Lousiville, Ky./Seneca) had 18, Clifford had 16 and sophomore defensive specialis Brittany Rohrkasse (Mason, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) had 12.

In the second match of the day, Otterbein won by the scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-23.  Sullivan and sophomore middle hitter Tyler Deaton (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) each had 10 kills to lead the offense, while Clifford and Verville each had 15 assists.  Castiglioni led the defensive effort with 24 digs.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Sullivan was named to the All-Tournament team for her play in the four tournament matches.

The Saints return to action on Tuesday (September 6) when they host across-the-river rival, the College of Mount St. Joseph in a non-conference dual match at 7 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
