Saints split final day of Space Coast Games

(VIERA, Fla.) – The Thomas More University softball team capped off their trip to Florida for the Space Coast Games falling to Wayne State (3-4) in 8 innings before defeating Purdue Northwest (3-2) on Friday evening (March 13). The Saints went 4-6 for the entirety of the Space Coast Games trip this week and will return home with an 8-12 overall record on the season.
 
How they scored
Game 1: Wayne State 4 – Thomas More 3
  • It was a defensive battle as Thomas More had two base runners in the first three innings and only got as far as first base while Wayne State had four base runners in the same time frame.
  • The Saints struck first in the top of the fourth inning as senior Ashtyn Elbe (Cincinnati, OH / Mercy McAuley) scored from first base off a sophomore Haylee Palmer (Lawrenceburg, IN / Lawrenceburg) double to left center field. Haylee Palme later scored after a sacrifice bunt from freshman Alisha Fox (Cincinnati, OH / Mason) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Brooklynn Couch (Lawrenceburg, IN / Lawrenceburg / Valparaiso)
  • Wayne State tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run. Before they took a one-run led in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Ashtyn Elbe scored her second run of the game in the top of the sixth after reaching on a double down the left field line and Haylee Palmer drove her in on another double to left center field.
  • Wayne State had the walk-off run score on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth.
Game 2: Thomas More 3 – Purdue Northwest 2
  • The Saints struck first as Haylee Palmer scored in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Purdue Northwest scored both of their runs in the top of the fourth to briefly take a 2-1 lead.
  • Thomas More responded in the bottom of the fourth as Haylee Palmer scored on a freshman Madi Hall (Gahanna, OH / Lincoln) sacrifice fly before Brooklynn Couch scored on a Alisha Fox triple in the next at bat.
 

Game 1:
  • Ashtyn Elbe went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. She also drew a walk and stole a base.
  • Haylee Palmer went 2-4 with two doubles, one run, and 2 RBIs.
  • Sophomore Loghan Cromer (Hilliard, OH / Hilliard Bradley) went 2-3 at the plae.
  • Brooklynn Couch had an RBI on a sacrifice hit.
Game 2:  

Game 1:
  • Junior Kylie Ropp (Bellefontaine, OH / Kenton Ridge) went fiving innings in her start. She allowed 5 hits, three runs, 1 walk, and one strikeout.
  • Freshman Kendyl Feutz (Bloomington, IN / Bloomington North) came in for 2.1 innings of relief, allowing 1 unearned run, three hits, and struck out two of the 11 batters she faced.
Game 2:
  • Alisha Fox pitched a complete seven innings, striking out five and not walking a batter. She gave up two earned runs and six hits.
 
Up Next
Thomas More will return home to take on Kentucky State on Tuesday (March 17). The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2pm.
