Baseball Splits With Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday

(OWENSBORO, KY)- Thomas More's baseball team split with Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon (April 13). The Saints lost game one by a score of 15 to 12 in 7 innings, and won game two in 10 innings 15 to 14.The Saints record moves to 10-25 on the year and 4-15 in conference play.
 

How they scored

Game 1: KWC 15-12 (7 Innings) 

  • KWC scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a home run.
  • In the top of the 2nd, junior Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle) hit a home run to tie the game at 1.
  • KWC struck for 8 runs in the bottom of the second to make it 9 to 1.
  • Thomas More responded in the top of the third with three runs, capped by a two run blast from first year Miguel Correa Jr. (Avon, IN / Avon). (4-9)
  • KWC hit a two run homer in the bottom of the third to make it 11 to 4.
  • In the top of the 5th, junior Riley Poston (Lancaster, OH / Lancaster hit a two RBI single to make it a five run game.
  • KWX added 2 runs in the 5th, and 2 runs in the 6th to make it 15 to 6.
  • Thomas More started off the 7th, with a two RBI single from senior Derek Marinucci (Canton, MI / Divine Child).
  • Thomas More added three more runs off a three run home run from sophomore Ty Cunningham (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield).
  • Miguel Correa Jr. made it a 15 to 12 game with a sac fly.

Game 2: TMU 15-14 (10 Innings) 

  • Senior Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier) hit a home run in the top of the first inning to put the Saints in front.
  • KWC scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5 to 1 lead.
  • Thomas More tied the game in the top of the 2nd off RBIs from senior AJ Enginger (Hamilton, OH / Badin), Gavin Vogelgesang, and a two RBI single from Miguel Correa Jr.
  • KWC scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd, and three runs in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 9 to 5.
  • Gunner Kalkhoff walked in the top of the 4th, to bring home a run and making it a 3 run game.
  • KWC scored two more runs in the 4th, and two runs in the 6th to make it a 13 to 6 game.
  • Gunner Kalkhoff hit his second long ball of the day in the top of the 7th to make it 13 to 7.
  • KWC hit a home run in the bottom of the 7th to keep it at a 7 run game.
  • In the 8th inning, Kalkhoff hit a two RBI double to make it 14 to 9.
  • Senior Ben Duncan (Hilliard, OH / Hilliard Bradley) hit a RBI double to get the Saints going in the top of the 9th.
  • AJ Enginger continued the inning with a 2 RBI single to make it 14 to 12.
  • Gunner Kalkhoff would tie the game with a 2 RBI single to force extra innings.
  • In the top of the 10th, AJ Enginger would reach on an error as the Saint run came hme to put them in front.

Game 2: 

  • Gunner Kalkhoff continued his big day by going 3 for 5 at the plate. He recorded 6 RBIs, a run score, a walk, a home run and a double.
  • Gavin Vogelgesang went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs, 3 runs scored, 2 walks, a home run and a double.
  • Eight different Saints posted hits in the ball game.

 

Game 1: 

  • Sophomore Ethan Stone (Hamilton, OH / Hamilton) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits with 2 strike outs.
  • Sophomore Nolan Krekeler (Loveland, OH / Moeller) pitched 0.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 3 hits.
  • First year Cameron Snider (Amelia, OH / Bethel-Tate) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and striking out one.

Game 2: 

  • First year Aaron Wichmann (Burlington, KY / Conner) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing 9 runs on 9 hits and one strikeout.
  • First year Jeff Levin (Cincinnati, OH Cincinnati Hills / Christian Academy) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. He struck out one.
  • Senior Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, OH / Oak Hills) pitched 1.0 inning, he allowed 2 runs on 1 hit and struck out one.
  • Junior Garrett Taulbee (Columbus, OH / Olentangy) pitched 4.0 innings. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 2. He picked up the win.
