Baseball Splits Day Two Series with Lake Erie

(Florence, KY)- Thomas More's baseball team won 7-6 and lost 7-0 to G-Mac North opponent Lake Erie on Sunday (February 23) afternoon. (This series is being contested as a non-conference series.) The Saints record goes to 3-2 after the split Double Header. 

How they scored

Game 1: Thomas More 7-6 (8 Innings) 

  • Lake Erie did not start the scoring until the 5th with a double making it 1-0. 

  • Lake Erie added another on a Home Run in the 6th making it 2-0. 

  • Lake Erie added 2 insurance runs in the 7th on a triple and a single, making it 4-0. 

  • Thomas More rallied in the 7th to put up 4 runs to tie the game and go into extras. Senior Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier) and Junior Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle) each drove in 2 runs. 

  • Lake Erie scored the "Ghost Runner" and 1 more to make it 6-4 in the 8th. 

  • Gavin Vogelgesang came through again, scoring the "Ghost Runner" for the Saints to make it a 1-run ballgame. 

  • Drew Barth walked it off for the Saints on a 2 RBI single to Right Field to win 7-6! 

Game 2: Lake Erie 7-0 (7 Innings) 

  • Lake Erie started the scoring in the 5th inning with a double, making it 1-0. 

  • Lake Erie hit their second Homer of the day to make it 3-0 in the 6th. 

  • Lake Erie got another run on a single before hitting a 3-run homer to make it 7-0 in the 7th. 

Game 1: 

  • First year Miguel Correa Jr. (Avon, IN / Avon) went 3-4 with a 2B and a BB, getting on base 4 times. 

  • Gunner Kalkhoff drove in the 2 tying runs in the 7th on a double down the Right Field line. 

  • First Year Drew Barth (Fort Thomas, KY / Highlands) walked it off for the Saints with a 2 RBI single. 

Game 2: 

  • Senior Ben Duncan (Hilliard, OH / Hilliard Bradley) added a Triple. 

Game 1: 

  • Senior Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, OH / Oak Hills) had a Quality Start throwing 6 Innings with 5 strikeouts, and allowed 2 Earned Runs. 

  • First Year Aaron Wichmann (Burlington, KY / Conner) went 1IP and allowed 2 Earned Runs. 

  • Sophomore Ethan Stone (Hamilton, OH / Hamilton) pitched the 8th inning and allowed 1 Earned Run. He is credited with the win. 

Game 2: 

  • Reigning G-MAC South Pitcher of the week, Junior Jack Perdue (Louisville, KY / Christian Academy) had another Quality Start as he went 6 IP with 4 Punchouts and allowing 3 Earned Runs. 

  • First Year Dylan Thompson (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier) went 0.2 IP, allowing 3 Earned Runs. 

  • Senior George Donohoe (Villa Hills, KY / Immaculate Conception) got the final out, allowing an earned run.

The Saints are staying at Thomas More Stadium next week to take on the University of Springfield Illinois for another Double Header on Friday, February 28. First pitch is at Noon, with Game 2 to immediately follow.
