(GREENWOOD, Ind.) – The College Sports Communicators announced their 2023 women's tennis Academic All-District Teams Tuesday afternoon and the Saints had two athletes recognized. Sophomore
Noelia Martinez Garcia (Santander, Spain/IES Las Llamas) and senior
Kimberly Sabga (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago/International School of Port of Spain) were their two honorees. Athletes from NCAA Division I, II, and III as well as the NAIA are recognized for this honor.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a sophomore both academically and athletically, participated in at least 50% of their teams' games at their listed position, been at their current institution for one full academic year, have at least a 3.50 grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale, and be a starter or important reserve. Each sport has a limited number of athletes that may be nominated, with tennis's limit being four.
Martinez Garcia is a Biology major, who currently boasts a 3.90 cumulative GPA. She was recently named Academic All Mid-South Conference for the first time in her career. Sabga is a Sports and Entertainment Marketing major with a 3.66 cumulative GPA. She was named Academic All MSC for the third time this spring and was also named to the MSC Champions of Character Team for the second time in her career.
Martinez Garcia finished her 2023 season with a 10-7 record in singles play and a 9-8 record in doubles action. The 10 singles victories were a team high. In singles, she won nine matches in the No. 3 position and one match at No. 2. She won seven doubles matches at the No. 2 spot and one in both the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
Sabga went 7-10 in singles competition this season and 9-8 in doubles play. She won all seven of her singles matches in the No. 6 position and won eight doubles matches at No. 3 and one at No. 1.
They advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, with the announcement of those teams coming out at Noon ET on June 1st.
