Baseball Cruises by Midway 14-6

(FLORENCE, Ky.)-Thomas More University baseball team defeated Midway on Tuesday (March 8), 14-6. The Saints overall record improves to 9-7.

• Senior Casey Nowak (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) scored on a wild pitch to put the Saints on the board 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Cooper) scored on a loaded bases walk (2-0). First year AJ Enginger (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) and sophomore Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) both scored off a single hit by first year Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) (4-0) to close out the scoring for the Saints in the bottom of the first.
• Midway scored one run in the top of the third inning and one run in the top of the fourth (4-2).
• Brady Baldock would hit a sac fly to left field to send in junior Noah Weingartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) to end the Saints lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
• In the bottom of the sixth inning, junior Cooper Daniels (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) placed down a sac bunt to advance runners and then an error on the throw advanced senior Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky./New Richmond) home (6-2). A sac fly to center field by Casey Nowak would send in Gavin Vogelgesang to make it a 7-2 game.
• Midway would score four runs in the top of the seventh inning (7-6).
• Gavin Vogelgesang would hit a shallow single to right field to score senior Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) in the bottom of the seventh inning (8-6). AJ Enginger and Brett Benzinger both scored for the Saints after a back to back batters of bases being loaded (10-6). Junior Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) would hit a two RBI single to right field to send in Cooper Daniels and Gavin Vogelgesang to extend the Saints lead to 12-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Casey Nowak would score off an infield ground out hit by Brady Baldock (13-6). Bailey Martin would step up next and hit a double to right field to send in Noah Weingartner in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 14-6 game. 

• Jacob Caruso went 2-5 at the plate with a double and two RBIs.
• Bailey Martin went 2-5 at the plate with two doubles, one rbi, and scored one run.
• Brett Benzinger was 1-2 with one rbi, two walks, and scored two runs.
• Gavin Vogelgesang was 2-4 with three RBIs and scored two runs.

• Junior pitcher Hunter Nantz (London, Ky./North Laurel) pitched 3.2 innings allowing two earned runs off four hits and struck out two.
• Senior pitcher Mitch Mierke (Milford, Oho/Milford) pitched 2.1 innings allowing no runs and no hits and struck out one.
• First year pitcher Jackson Grimmelsman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 0.1 inning allowing four earned runs off four hits and struck out one. 
• First year pitcher Ben Duncan (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) pitched 1.2 innings allowing no runs off one hit.
• First year pitcher Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) pitched 1.0 inning allowing no hits and no runs.

The Saints return to the field on Thursday (March 10) against Freed Hardeman in a double header beginning at 11:00 am ET.
