Baseball Clinches First Two Games of Series to Upset #22 Freed Hardeman

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.)-Thomas More University baseball team upset #22 Freed Hardeman in the first two games of the conference series on Thursday (March 10) by the scores of 2-1 in game one and 6-4 in game two. The Saints overall record improves to 11-7 and 4-3 in conference.

Game 1: Thomas More 2-1

• Freed Hardeman scored on run in the top of the second inning (0-1).
• Senior Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) singled to send in sophomore Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Cooper) to tie the ball game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky./New Richmond) would step up to the plate for an RBI single to score sophomore Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) for the go ahead run (2-1).

Game 2: Thomas More 6-4

• Freed scored one run in the top of the third inning (0-1).
• Bailey Martin would hit a bomb over the right center fence for a three run home run in the bottom of the third inning to put the Saints on the board 3-1.
• Freed would score one run in the top of the fifth inning (3-2).
• In the bottom of the fifth inning, Brady Baldock would single to send in Gavin Pearson to extend the Saints lead to 4-2. First year AJ Enginger (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) hit a RBI single to center to advance Bailey Martin in to score (5-2). First year Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) would ground out to second base to send in Brady Baldock for the Saints final run of the game (6-2).
• Freed Hardeman would score two runs in the top of the seventh inning (6-4).

Game 1:

• Junior Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) went 2-3 at the plate.
• Bailey Martin was 1-3 with a RBI.
• Brett Benzinger was 2-2 with a RBI.

Game 2:

• Gavin Pearson went 1-1 at the plate and score two runs.
• Bailey Martin was 2-4 with a 3-run home run and scored two runs.
• Brady Baldock went 2-4 with one RBI and scored one run.

Game 1:

• Sophomore right handed pitcher Mychal Grogan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up one earned run off five hits, and struck out four.

Game 2:

• Sophomore right handed pitcher Landon Scott (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two earned runs off seven hits, and struck four out.
• Graduate student right handed pitcher Kyle Fieger (Ft. Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up two earned runs off five hits, and stuck out one.
• Junior right handed pitcher Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio/La Salle) pitched 2.0 innings to get the save, giving up no runs and only one hit, and struck out two.

The Saints return to the field tomorrow (March 11) to finish their series against #22 Freed Hardeman at 11:00 am on Thomas More Field.
