#1 Women's Basketball Fight Back but Come up Short for First Conference Loss of the Season to Cumberlands (Ky.)

(WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.)- #1 Thomas More University Women's Basketball take their first conference loss of the season to Cumberlands (Ky.), 79-87. The Saints overall record 21-2 and 14-1 in conference.

  • Senior Taylor Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) drained a 3-point jump shot to start the scoring off for the Saints to put the team 3-2 with 8:41 to play in the first quarter.
  • With 4:30 to play in the first quarter, graduate student Alexah Chrisman (Greendale, Ind./McAuley) made a jump shot to put the Saints down by five (10-15).
  • Sophomore transfer Alex Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) hit a 3-point jump shot for the Saints final basket of the quarter with 2:07 to play.
  • The Saints trailed 18-21 going into the second quarter.
  • Junior Kenzie Schwarber (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) started the second quarter off with a 3-point basket to cut the Patriots lead to 20-23 with 8:39 to play in the first half.
  • Sophomore Rachel Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) swished in a 3-pointer with 5:41 to play to tie up the game at 31-31.
  • Chrisman drove to the basket for a layup for the Saints final basket of the half with 1:38 to play.
  • The Saints went into the locker room trailing 40-42 at the half.
  • Junior Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) led the Saints with seven points and had two rebounds and an assist.
  • Chrisman brought down six rebounds to lead the Saints and had six points and two assists.
  • Junior Summer Secrist (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) led the team with three assists and had one rebound and two assists.
  • The Saints were 38.9% (14-36) from the field, 36.8% (7-19) from the 3-point line, and 71.4% (5-7) from the free throw line in the first half.

  • Chrisman started the second half off with one free throw to put the Saints down by one with 9:40 to play (40-41).
  • Junior Emily Simon (Hilliard Davidson, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) droe to the rim for a layup with 4:49 to play (52-54).
  • Sophomore Kelly Brenner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) made a jump shot to end the scoring for the Saints in the third quarter with 57 to play.
  • The Saints trailed 56-62 going into the fourth quarter.
  • Secrist made a layup to kick the scoring off for the Saints in the fourth quarter with 7:51 to play (58-66).
  • With 2:53 to play, junior Zoie Barth (St. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) made a 3-point shot to put the Saints within 10 (67-77).
  • Barth made the Saints final basket of the game with a layup with 13 seconds to play to put the Saints within four (79-83).
  • The Saints drop their first conference loss of the season to the Patriots (79-87).
  • The Saints were 55.6% (15-27) from the field, 38.5% (5-13) from the 3-point line, and 66.7% (4-6) from the free throw line in the second half.

  • Clos tallied 16 points to lead the Saints and had three rebounds.
  • Hurst also put up 16 points to lead the team and had three rebounds and one assist.
  • Chrisman led the Saints with 11 rebounds and 3 assists and had 11 points.
  • Secrist also had three assists to lead the team and had five points and one rebound.
  • Simon put up three assists to lead the Saints and had four points and one rebound.
  • The Saints were 46% (29-63) from the field, 37.5% (12-32) from the 3-point line, and 69.2% (9-13) from the free throw line.
