#1 Women's Basketball Survives a Tough Test At Freed-Hardeman

(HENDERSON, Tenn.)- The #1 ranked Thomas More Women's Basketball team defeated Freed-Hardeman on the road by a score of  67 to 60. The victory moves Thomas More to an overall record of 13-0 and a Mid-South conference record of 8-0. 

 

• Senior Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Davidson) got the Saints started with a pair of free throws to open the game.
• After an 8 point Lion run, senior Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky. / Highlands) knocks down a three pointer off an assist from junior Rachel Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio / Summit Country Day) to make it 8 to 5 Freed-Hardeman.
• A pair of free throws from Zoie Barth made it a 1 point game with 5 minute to go in the opening quarter.
• Junior Alex Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mercy McAuley) knocks down a three pointer that ended the Lions 5 point run. Assist to Emily Simon.
• At the end of the first quarter the Saints trailed 17 to 11.
• Emily Simon got the Saints rolling to start the next quarter with a three pointer to make it 17 to 14 Freed-Hardeman.
• A jumper by Zoie Barth kept the Saints within 3.
• Zoie Barth follows with a three pointer to make the score 21-19 Freed-Hardeman.
• A layup from Emily Simon and then a three pointer from senior Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky. / Conner) off an assist from Rachel Martin tied the game at 26.
• Junior Sammi Whiteman (Covington, Ohio / Covington) scores the next 4 Thomas More points to keep the score tied at 30. 
• At the end of the first half Freed-Hardeman was out front by a score of 31 to 30.
• Thomas More shot 9 for 27 from the field in the first half.
• Thomas More led the rebounding battle by a 16 to 12 margin.
• Zoie Barth led the Saints with 12 first half points.
• Emily Simon had 7 points and three rebounds at the break.

• Emily Simon again gets the Saints started with a basket to open the half and gives Thomas More a 1 point lead.
• A three pointer from Courtney Hurst, assisted by Zoie Barth put the Saints up 35 to 33.
• After Freed-Hardeman regained the lead, Zoie Barth and Alex Smith both find the basket to put the Saints back on top.
• Alex Smith makes another basket to give Thomas More a 3 point lead with 4 minutes to go in the quarter.
• An Emily Simon three pointer put Thomas More out front 44 to 41.
• With one minute to go in the quarter, junior Kelly Brenner (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) knocks down a three pointer to make the score 48 to 45 Thomas More.
• Junior Maggie Jones (Piner, Ky. / Simon Kenton) makes a pair of free throws right before the quarter ends.
• Thomas More led after the fourth quarter by a score of 50 to 45.
• Alex Smith makes a layup (Hurst assist) and is followed by a Kelly Brenner three pointer (Jones assist) to give Thomas More a 55 to 47 lead.
• A pair of free throws from Alex Smith and another basket from Kelly Brenner push the Saints lead by to 7.
• With 3 minutes to go, Emily Simon makes a layup to give Thomas More a 9 point lead.
• Four free throws from Zoie Barth, and a pair of free throws from Courtney Hurst close out the game for Thomas More.
• Thomas More won by a score of 67 to 60.
• Thomas More shot 20 for 54 from the field.
• Zoie Barth led the Saints with 18 points and 4 rebounds.
• Alex Smith finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

The Saints return to action on Saturday afternoon (December 17th) in McKenzie, Tennessee as they travel to face Bethel at 2:00 pm ET for Mid-South Conference play.
