#1 Women's Basketball Defeat #11 Indiana Wesleyan With a Thrilling Last Second Shot by Emily Simon

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.)-#1 Thomas More University women's basketball team defeated #11 Indiana Wesleyan in a top 15 NAIA Women's Basketball match up on Monday evening (October 31), 58-53. The Saints overall record improves to 1-0.

First Half
  • Senior Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) made a jumper to put the Saints on the board 2-0 for their first points of the season with 8:41 to play in the first quarter.
  • Junior Mattison Vickers (Covington, Ky./Simon Kenton) launched in a 3-point jumper with 5:25 to play in the first quarter to make it a 10-6 game.
  • With 32 seconds left in the first quarter, Courtney Hurst would drain a three pointer for the Saints final basket of the quarter and clinch their 6-0 run over the Wildcats. The Wildcats would make a layup at the last second to put them within six (18-12).
  • First year Jenna Lillard (Ludlow, Ky./Ludlow) made a jumper for the Saints first basket of the second quarter with 9:48 to play in the half (20-12).
  • Junior Kelly Brenner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) would start the Saints 9-0 run over the Wildcats with a 3-point shot with 5:06 to play (29-20).
  • Courtney Hurst would close out the scoring for the Saints in the first half with a 3-point shot with 1:59 left on the clock to extend the lead to 41-24.
  • The Wildcats would make two free throws at the end of the half to make it a 41-26 game into the locker room at the half.
  • Courtney Hurst led the Saints with eight points and two rebounds and tallied one assist.
  • Mattison Vickers would also lead the Saints with eight points in the first half and had one rebound.
  • Senior Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) recorded seven points, two assists, and one rebound.

  • Junior Rachel Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) led the team with four assists in the first half.

Second Half
  • Junior Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) would kick things off for the Saints in the third quarter, driving to the rim for a layup with 8:08 clock (43-26).
  • Mattison Vickers would knock in a free throw for the Saints final basket of the quarter with 2:39 to play (47-34).
  • The Saints would lead 47-43 going into the final quarter of the game. 
  • Courtney Hurst started things off for the Saints in the fourth quarter with a jump shot to help the team regain the lead with 7:28 to play in the game (49-48).
  • With 6:45 to play in the game, Zoie Barth would knock in two free throws to surpass 1,000 career points to put the Saints up by three (51-48).
  • The Wildcats would tie the game up at 55-55 with a 3-point shot with 1:06 to play in the game. 
  • Rachel Martin would steal the ball with three seconds left on the clock and throw it to Emily Simon who would launch a shot from behind the volleyball line to seal the Saints win over the Wildcats (58-55).
  • Emily Simon led the Saints in the second half with 10 points and five rebounds.
  • First year Rylee Turner (Newport, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) also led the Saints with five rebounds in the second half.
  • Rachel Martin tallied two assists to lead the Saints in the second half.
  • The Saints were 13.8% (6-29) from the field, 10% (1-10) from the 3-point line, and 40% (4-10) from the free throw line in the second half.
