(HELENA, Mont.)- #1 Thomas More University women's basketball team defeated #4 Carroll College on Friday evening (November 4), 62-54. The Saints overall record improves to 2-0 to start the season.
- The Saints had a slow to start the game, senior Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) helped the team get on the board with 6:47 to play in the first quarter with a layup (2-9).
- Junior Mattison Vickers (Covington, Ky./Simon Kenton) would drain a 3-point jump shot with 2:58 on the clock in the first quarter, to make it an eight point game (6-14).
- Courtney Hurst would make her first of five threes she made on the night for the Saints last points of the first quarter with 2:34 to play.
- The Saints would trail 8-19 going into the second quarter.
- Junior Kelly Brenner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) would kick things off for the Saints in the second quarter with a jump shot with 9:29 to play in the half (11-20).
- First year Rylee Turner (Newport, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) would make her first three point basket of her college career to put the Saints within four, with 3:46 left to play in the second quarter.
- With 15 seconds left in the half, senior Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) would make one of two free throws to give the Saints the lead for the first time of the night going into the locker room at the half (28-27).
- Courtney Hurst led the Saints with 12 points in the first half and had one assist.
- Rylee Turner would follow with five points and led the team with three rebounds.
- Five players led in assists with one each.
- The Saints were 29.6% (8-27) from the field, 38.5% (5-13) from the 3-point line, and 70% (7-10) from the free throw line in the first half.Â
- To start of the second half, Emily Simon would drive to the rim for a layup to put the Saints within three with 8:22 to play in the third quarter (30-33).
- Courtney Hurst would yet again, drain another 3-point shot to close out the Saints third quarter 10-0 run over the Fighting Saints, with 5:05 left in the quarter to extend the Saints lead to 40-33.
- Junior Rachel Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) took an open look layup for the Saints final points of the third quarter with 28 seconds left (47-41).Â
- The Fighting Saints made two free throws to put them within four of the Saints going into the fourth quarter (47-43).
- Senior Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) scored the Saints first points of the fourth quarter, driving to the basket for a layup and one, with 8:59 to play in the game (50-43).
- Emily Simon sunk two free throws to give the Saints their largest lead of the night with 2:10 left to play (58-47).
- With eight seconds left in the game, Emily Simon would make one of two free throws to seal the Saints 62-54 win over the Fighting Saints.Â
- Zoie Barth led the way for the Saints in the second half with 10 points and four rebounds.
- Emily Simon followed close behind with nine points and three rebounds, and led the Saints with two assists.
- Rachel Martin also led with two assists and had three rebounds.
- Courtney Hurst recorded eight points, two rebounds, and one assist in the second half.
- The Saints were 47.6% (10-21) from the field, 33.3% (3-9) from the 3-point line, and 73.3% (11-15) from the free throw line in the second half.
- Courtney Hurst tallied 20 points to lead the Saints for the night and had two rebounds and two assists.
- Zoie Barth followed with 12 points and four rebounds.
- Emily Simon led the Saints defensively with five total rebounds and had 11 points and two assists.
- Rachel Martin had three assists to lead the team and had three rebounds and three points.
