Grogan and Mierke Combine For Complete Game as Baseball Defeats Shawnee State

(Crestview Hills, Ky.) - The baseball program at Thomas more defeated Shawnee State in game one of their three game series by a score of 8-2 after strong pitching performances from Mychal Grogan and Mitch Mierke. With the win the Saints improve to 15-16 overall and 8-3 in conference play.

  • Shawnee State scored one run in the fourth and one in the eighth.
  • Thomas More scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second via a Gavin Pearson single that would score Tyler Flick from first.
  • The Saints opened the flood gates in the bottom of the sixth as they saw four runs cross the plate in Brady Reynolds, Flick, Pearson, and Brennen Baker to break a 1-1 tie and make the score 5-1.
  • TMU added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh as Cooper Daniels and Bailey Martin crossed the plate to make the score 7-1 in favor of Thomas More.
  • Casey Nowak hit a solo homerun over the right field fence in the eighth to give Thomas More their final run and the final run of the game to make the score 8-2.

  • Nowak led the Saints with two hits in four at bats and drove across two runs, crossing the plate once, and hitting a solo homerun.
  • Flick batted two-for-three on the day scoring two runs, and driving across one as well.
  • Pearson went two-for-three in the game with a run batted in and two runs scored.
  • Brady Baldock was one-for-five in the batters box with two runs batted in.

  • Grogan pitched six complete innings allowing only one run on seven hits, striking out four and earning the win.
  • Mierke threw for three innings allowing one run on two hits, striking out three, and earning the save. 

Baseball returns to the diamond tomorrow April 3, for a day two double-header against Shawnee State, first pitch from Thomas More Saints Field is set for 12 p.m. ET.
