No. 4 Thomas More Runs Away from Phoenix, 76-51, in the Second Half

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The fourth-ranked Thomas More University women's basketball team returned to it's winning ways as it defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) University, 74-51, tonight (Thursday, January 21, 2021) in a Mid-South Conference game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

  • Thomas More jumped out to a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Cumberland opened the second quarter on a 13-4 run to tie the game at 24-24 with 3:31 to play in the quarter when Gracie Johnson made a lay-up.
  • Sophomore guard Summer Secrist (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) converted and old fashion three-point play with 2.8-seconds in the second quarter to give the Saints a 27-24 lead at halftime.
  • Sophomore guard Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) had five points and five steals.
  • Sophomore guard Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) had five points and four rebounds.
  • Sophomore guard Kenzie Schwarber (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) added five points and three rebounds.

  • Thomas More came out of the locker room and out-scored the Phoenix 34-12 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 61-36 after three quarters.
  • The Saints cruised to the 74-51 victory.
  • In the second half, Thomas More shot 58.1 percent (18-of-31) from the field, including 58.3 percent (seven-of-12) from behind the three-point arc.
  • Sophomore guard Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) scored nine points in the second half.
  • Simon and Schwarber each had eight points in the final 20 minutes of action.
  • Senior forward Kylie Anderson (Florence, Ky./Boone County) scored the final six points of the game.

  • Thomas More improves to 16-1 overall and 11-1 in the Mid-South.
  • Cumberland falls to 2-8 overall and 1-8 in the Mid-South.
  • The Saints shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the field, including 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from behind the arc.
  • 11 Saints found the scoring column tonight.
  • Simon finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
  • Schwarber added 13 points, five rebounds and one steal.
  • Hurst just missed double-figure scoring with nine points, while pulling down two boards and dishing out three assists.
  • Senior guard Briana McNutt (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
  • Barth finished with five steals, four assists, five points and five rebounds.

  • Thomas More returns to action on Saturday (January 23) when it hosts 17th-ranked Lindsey Wilson College at 1:30 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
