Box Score 2 (BLUEFIELD, Va.) – The Thomas More University baseball team split a doubleheader today (Saturday, February 22, 2020) with Bluefield (Va.) College at Bowen Field in Bluefield, Virginia. Bluefield won game one, 10-9, and the Saints won the nightcap, 7-4.
GAME ONE
- Thomas More scored one in the first, two in the third, four in the fourth, one in the firth and one in the sixth.
- Bluefield plated four in the first, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, one in the sixth, one the seventh and one in the ninth.
- Sophomore third baseman Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-five with a triple, three runs batted-in and one run scored.
- Senior catcher Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a home home run, a RBI and a run scored.
- Six other Saints each had one hit in the game.
- Senior pitcher Mitchell Morris (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) started and had a no-decision as he pitched five innings giving up seven runs (four earned) on five hits.
- Junior pitcher Drew Schramm (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) suffered the loss as he pitched one and a third innings and gave up one run (earned) on two hits and struck out one.
GAME TWO
- Bluefield scored four runs in the fifth inning.
- The Saints scored four in the first, one in the second, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
- Martin was two-for-four with a RBI and a run scored.
- First-year first baseman Dylan Doverspike (Verona, Ky./Beechwood) was two-for-four with a run scored.
- Seven other Saints each had a hit in the game.
- Senior pitcher Griffin Smallwood (Lakeside Park, Ky./Dixie Heights) earned the win as he pitched four and two-thirds innings and gave up four runs (all unearned) on six hits and struck out four.
- Senior pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) picked up the save as he pitched one inning scoreless inning, while giving up one hit and striking out two.
- The Saints and the Rams will close out the three-game series tomorrow with a single-nine inning game beginning at 12 p.m. at Bowen Field.
