Five Saints Reach Double-Figures in No. 22 Thomas More's 89-77 Win Over Cumberlands

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – Five Saints reached double-figures today (Saturday, February 15, 2020) to lead the 22nd-ranked Thomas More University women's basketball team to an 89-77 victory over the University of the Cumberlands in a Mid-South Conference game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

  • Thomas More jumped out to a 20-9 lead when senior forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) made a lay-up with 4:52 to play in the first quarter.
  • The Patriots closed the quarter on a 10-7 run to cut the lead to 27-19 after one quarter.
  • Cumberlands opened the second quarter on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 31-28 with 6:31 to play in the quarter when Kayla Bruner made a jumper.
  • The Saints answered with a 21-11 run to extend the lead to 52-39 at halftime when first-yard Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) made a three-pointer with 27-seconds to play in the second quarter.

  • Thomas More opened the third quarter on a 19-12 run to increase the lead to 71-51 when senior guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) made a three-point with 2:48 to play in the quarter.
  • Cumberlands scored the final nine points of the quarter to cut the lead to 71-60 after three quarter when Abby Douglas made a lay-up at the buzzer.
  • The Patriots used a 17-8 run to open the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 79-77 to play with 3:27 to play in the game when Silvia Veloso made a lay-up. 
  • Undaunted, the Saints scored the final 10 points of the game to post the 89-77 victory.

  • Thomas More improves to 18-7 overall and 7-5 in the Mid-South.
  • Cumberlands falls to 19-7 overall and 6-6 in the Mid-South.
  • Thomas More shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the field, including 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from behind the three-point arc.
  • The Saints shot 93.8 percent (15-of-16) from the free-throw line.
  • Schultz led the team in scoring with 20 points, while she pulled down eight rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked one shot.
  • First-year guard Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) added 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and one block.
  • Hurst finished with 16 points, six assists, two steals and two rebounds.
  • Saner had 15 points, two assists, three rebounds and one block.
  • Sophomore guard Briana McNutt (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) finished with 10 points, three assists, two steals and one assist.

  • Thomas More returns to action on Thursday (February 20) when they travel to Campbellsville, Kentucky to play third-ranked Campbellsville University at 6 p.m.
