(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More University women's basketball team fell, 89-78, to seventh-ranked Shawnee State University today (Saturday, February 1, 2020) in a Mid-South Conference game at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth, Ohio.
- Shawnee State jumped out to a 5-0 lead when Brandie Snow made a jumper with 9:14 to play in the first quarter.
- The Saints answered with an 11-5 run to take an 11-10 lead with 4:23 to play in the first quarter when first-year guard Summer Secrist (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) made two free-throws.
- The Bears ended the quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 24-13 lead after the first quarter.
- Shawnee State opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 31-15 when Evelyn Oktavec made a three-pointer with 7:37 to play in the quarter.
- Thomas More used a 22-11 run capped by two free-throws by senior guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) to cut the lead to 42-37 with 1:00 to play in the second quarter.
- Shawnee State scored the final two points of the quarter to take a 44-37 halftime lead.
- The Saints opened the third quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 46-43 with 8:09 to play in the quarter when senior forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) made a jumper.
- Carson Roney made two free-throws with 3:39 to play in the third quarter to cap a 16-3 run as the Bears extended the lead to 62-46.
- Thomas More closed out the quarter on a 15-6 run to cut the lead to 68-61 at the end of three quarter when first-year guard Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) made two free-throws.
- First-year guard Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) made a three-pointer to cut the lead to 68-64 with 9:14 to play in the fourth quarter.
- That would be as close as Thomas More would come as Shawnee State closed out the game on a 21-14 run to post the 89-78 win.
- Thomas More falls to 16-7 overall and 5-5 in the Mid-South.
- Shawnee State improves to 21-3 overall and 8-2 in the Mid-South.
- Schultz finished with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and one block.
- Hurst added 13 points, one steal and one rebounds.
- Barth had 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Junior guard Briana McNutt (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) had eight points, five rebounds and one steal.
- Saner had seven points, five rebounds and one block.
- The Saints return to action on Thursday (February 6) when they travel to Georgetown, Kentucky to play Georgetown College at 6 p.m.
