21st Ranked Thomas More Defeats Cincinnati Christian, 85-53, in Season Opener

(CINCINNATI, Ohio) – The 21st-ranked Thomas More University women's basketball team used a big second quarter tonight (Friday, October 25, 2019) to defeat across-the-river rival Cincinnati Christian University, 85-53, in the season opener on the first night of the Skyline Chili Classic at Jill Rendel Court in Cincinnati, Ohio.

  • The Saints shot 42.9 percent from the field in the first half as they connected on 15-of-35 shots.
  • After the game was tied four times in the first quarter senior forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) made a field goal with 19-seconds to play in the quarter to give the Saints a 17-15 lead at the quarter break.
  • Thomas More opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 23-15 lead with 7:14 to play in the quarter when senior guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) made a field goal.
  • CCU answered with a 5-0 to cut the lead to 23-20 with 4:41 to play in the second quarter.
  • The Saints responded with a 13-0 run to end the first half capped by a free-throw by junior guard Syarra Sellers (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) to give the team a 36-20 lead at halftime.

  • Thomas More out-scored the Eagles 21-16 to extend the lead to 57-36 after three quarter.
  • The Saints had a 28-17 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to post the 85-53 victory.
  • Thomas More shot 55.9 (19-of-34) from the field in the second half, including 66.7 percent (four-of-six) from behind the three-point arc.
