Thomas More Drops Doubleheader at Franklin

(FRANKLIN, Ind.) – The Thomas More College baseball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader with 22nd-ranked Franklin College today (Sunday, April 22, 2018) at McDowell Field in Franklin, Indiana.  The Grizzlies won game one, 10-9, and the nightcap, 5-2.

The Saints are now 14-15, while the Grizzlies are 28-2.

Franklin led game one 10-5 after eight innings and the Saints rallied and plated four in the both of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Franklin posted a 10-9 victory.

On the mound, first-year pitcher Jordan Houze (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Lawrenceburg) suffered his first career loss as he pitched five innings giving up seven runs (all earned) on 10 hits and struck out two.  Senior pitcher Noah Frantz (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) pitched two innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on three hits and struck out two.  First-year pitcher Ryan Mitts (West Harrison, Ind./East Central) pitched one inning, giving up one run (earned) on two hits.

Three Saints had multiple hits in the game for Thomas More.  Senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-six with a double and two runs scored.  Junior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was three-for-five with a home run, a double, three runs batted-in and a run scored.  Junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, Franklin scored on the second, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth, while holding the Saints to one in the second and one in the fifth for the 5-2 victory.

At the plate, junior designated hitter Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the team as he was two-for-four with a double and a RBI.

Junior pitcher Jonathan Breeden (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) started and a no-decision as he pitched three innings giving up one run (unearned) on three hits and struck out three.  Senior pitcher Brandon Ward (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) suffered the loss as he pitched two innings of relief and gave up two runs (both earned) on three hits and struck out one.

Thomas More returns to the diamond on Tuesday (April 24) when it travels to Lexington, Kentucky for a non-conference game against Transylvania University.  First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
