Box Score (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team defeated Franklin College, 20-13, today (Monday, March 30, 2015) in a non-conference game that took three hours and 37 minutes to complete at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 13-3 and with the loss, the Grizzlies fall to 8-12.
Thomas More scored one run in the first, six in the second, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and eight in the sixth, while holding Franklin to one run in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, five in the sixth and one in the eighth for the 20-13 victory. Thomas More belted out 25 hits, while Franklin had 14.
The Saints were led at the plate by senior catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) and junior designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) as Popham was four-for-five with two runs batted-in and one run scored and Pogue was four-for-six with three doubles, six RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore right fielder Ben Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was three-for-five with a triple, a double, four RBI and four runs scored, sophomore center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-six with a triple, a double, three RBI and two runs scored and junior left fielder Zach Fardo (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) was three-for-six with a RBI and a run scored.
Freshman pitcher Tony LaCorte (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) pitched three and a third innings of relief to earn the win as he gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out four. Freshman pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) started and pitched four innings and gave up six runs (all earned) on seven hits and struck out one to earn a no decision. Sophomore pitcher Jake Seaman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) pitched one and a third innings of relief and gave up four runs (all earned) on two hits.
Thomas More returns to action tomorrow as it hosts Centre College in a non-conference game beginning at 4 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
