Thomas More Sweeps Bethany and Clinches Spot in PAC Tournament

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College baseball team swept Bethany College today in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  Thomas More won game one, 9-2, and the nightcap, 4-3.

With the sweep the Saints improve to 20-16 overall and 14-9 in the PAC as they clinch a spot in next week's PAC Baseball Championship Tournament in Washington, Pennsylvania.  Thomas More has been in the four-team PAC Tournament every year since joining the conference during the 2005-2006 academic year.  Bethany falls to 18-15 overall and 13-10 in the PAC.

In the first game of the day, Thomas More scored one run in the first, two in the second, six in the fourth and one in the sixth, while holding the Bison to a run in the first and a run in the seventh for the 9-2 win.

Sophomore pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six innings and gave up one run (earned) on four hits, while striking out three.  Freshman pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) pitched one inning of relief and gave up one run (unearned) on one hits and struck out two.

Thomas More was led at the plate by sophomore designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier), who went three-for-four with a double and two runs batted-in and senior third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry), who went three-for-four with a double, a RBI and two runs scored.  Four other Saints had multiple hits in the game as freshman center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a double, a RBI and two runs scored, senior first baseman Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-three with three RBI and two runs scored, junior catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) was two-for-three with one run scored and senior shortstop/second baseman Tyler Graber (Plain City, Ohio/Johnathan Alder) was two-for-three with one run scored.

In the nightcap, Thomas More plated three runs in the second and one in the fourth, while holding the Bison to a run in the fourth and two in the sixth for the 4-3 victory.

Two Saints had multiple hits in the game as Metzger was two-for-three with a double and two RBI and Pogue was two-for-three with a double and a run scored.

Senior pitcher Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) earned the win as he pitched five innings and gave up one run (earned) on eight hits, while striking out two.  Ruberg earned his first save as he pitched one and a third inning of shutout relief, while striking out two and not giving up a hit.

Thomas More and Bethany will close out the three-game PAC series tomorrow (Sunday, May 4) with a single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.  Thomas More will honor its eight Seniors prior to first pitch as they will be playing their final game at Thomas More Field.
