Saints Sweep PAC Doubleheader at Bethany

(BETHANY, W.Va.) - The Thomas More College baseball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Bethany College today (Saturday, April 6, 2013) at Bethany Park in Bethany, West Virginia.  The Saints won game one, 11-2, and the nightcap, 5-1.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 13-6 overall and 5-3 in the PAC and the Bison fall to 3-13 overall and 1-9 in the PAC.

In game one, the Saints scored three runs in the first, two in the second, five in the fourth and one the fifth, while holding Bethany to two runs in the seventh for the 11-2 victory.

On the mound, senior pitcher Paul Uhl (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) earned the win as he pitched a complete game and gave up two runs (both earned) on six hits and struck out three.

Senior shortstop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) led the Saints at the plate as he was four-for-four with two doubles and two runs scored.  Junior left fielder Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, senior right fielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) was two-for-three with two RBI and a run scored and junior center fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with two doubles, five RBI and a run scored.

In the nightcap, Thomas More scored one the first, one in the second, one in the fifth and two in the sixth and held the Bison to a run in the first for the 5-1 victory.

Makin led the team at the plate as he was two-for-four with a home run, a RBI and two runs scored and sophomore catcher Alex Valentine (Butler, Ky./Pendleton County) was two-for-three with a RBI and a run scored.

On the mound, sophomore pitcher Tim Baldrick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) earned the win as the pitched four innings and gave up one run (earned) on six hits.  Senior pitcher David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) pitched three scoreless innings of relief and gave up two hits, while striking out one.

The two teams will close out the three-game PAC series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game at Bethany Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
