Box Score 2 (FRANKLIN, Ind.) - The Thomas More College baseball team split two games today (Saturday, March 16, 2013) as it defeated host Franklin College, 7-5, in 12 innings, but fell, 8-7, to Adrian College at John P. McDowell Field in Franklin, Indiana.
With the split the Saints are now 7-2 on the season.
In the first game of the day, Franklin led Thomas More, 5-0, after seven innings, but the Saints plated three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to force extra innings and then scored two runs in the 12th for the 7-5 victory.
Junior center fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the Saints at the plate as she was two-for-six with a home run, one run scored and four runs batted-in. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as senior right fielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) was two-for-five with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI, senior shortstop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) was two-for-five with a run scored and junior designated hitter Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-five.
Sophomore pitcher Tim Baldrick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) started and got a no-decision as he pitched six and two-thirds innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out four. Senior pitcher David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) pitched five and one-third innings of relief to earn the win as he gave up only two hits, while striking out eight.
In the second game of the day, Thomas More scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the eighth, but Adrian scored one in the first, four in the second, one in the seventh, one in the eighth and one in the ninth for the 8-7 victory.
Handley led four Saints with multiple hits in the game as he was three-for-five, while Darner was two-for-five with two RBI, junior third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) was two-for-five with a run scored and sophomore left fielder Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with a RBI.
On the mound, senior pitchers Paul Uhl (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) and Mike Hager (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) both got a no-decision as Uhl pitched two innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on three hits and struck out three and Hager pitched five innings and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits and struck out four. Junior pitcher Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) suffered the loss as he pitched one and two-third innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on two hits and struck out one.
The Saints return to the diamond on Tuesday (March 19) when they host Transylvania University in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
