Box Score (WINTER HAVEN, Fla.) - The 13th-ranked Thomas More College baseball team closed out its Florida swing with a 4-3 win over Beloit College today (Friday, March 9, 2012) on the final day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Chain of Lakes Complex in Winter Haven, Florida.
With the win, the Saints improve to 5-1 on the season. With the loss, the Buccaneers fall to 1-5 on the season.
Beloit scored two in the fifth and one the seventh, while Thomas More scored one in the first, two in the sixth and one in the seventh when freshman outfielder Jordan Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) scored on a squeeze play by freshman catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights).
On the mound, junior Grant Lewis (Mason, Ohio/Mason) started and earned a no-decision as he pitched five innings giving up two runs (one earned). Junior David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) pitched two and two-third innings of relief to earn the victory.
Offensively, the Saints were led at the plate by sophomore second baseman Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was two-for-three with two runs batted-in, junior short stop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City), who was two-for-four and freshman outfielder Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), who was two-for-three.
The Saints return to action on Tuesday (March 13) when they host Hanover College at 3 p.m. at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
