Etscheid Records Save and Win In Thomas More's Doubleheader Sweep Over Bethany

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Junior pitcher David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) recorded a save and win to help lead the Thomas More College baseball team to a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader sweep over Bethany College today (Tuesday, March 27, 2012) at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints won game one, 11-7, and the nightcap, 5-1.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the PAC and the Bison fall to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the PAC.

In game one, the Saints scored two in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth and seven in the fifth, while they held Bethany to three in the first, one in the third and three in the seventh for the 11-7 win.

Freshman pitcher Tim Baldrick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) started and earned the win as he pitched six inning giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits, while striking out three.  Etscheid earned the win as he pitched two-thirds of an inning and struck out both batters he faced.

The Saints were led at the plate by junior designated hitter Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic), who was four-four-four with a double, two runs batted-in and a run scored.  Four other Saints had multiple hits in the game as freshman left fielder Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with three RBI, senior first baseman Andrew Thole (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-three with a triple, a RBI and two runs scored, senior catcher Andrew Clements (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-three with a RBI and two runs scored and sophomore center fielder Adam Singley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) was two-for-four with a RBI and two runs scored.

In the second game, the Saints scored one in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth and held Bethany to one run in the fourth for the 5-1 victory.

On the mound, Etscheid earned the win as he started and pitched all seven innings giving up one run (unearned) on five hits and striking out five.

Offensively, Thole was the lone Saints with multiple hits in the game as he was two-for-three with a home run, a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Thomas More returns to action on Friday (March 30) when it opens a three-game series with Grove City College with a single nine-inning game starting at 3 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
