(FLORENCE, KY) - The Thomas More baseball team split in a doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday (April, 27th). TNU took game one by a score of 21 to 1, while Thomas More came back and won game two by a score of 8 to 4. Thomas More moves to an overall record of 14-34 on the season and a G-MAC record of 7-24.
Game 1: TNU 21-1 (7 innings)
- TNU took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning.
- Senior Gavin Pearson (Burlington, KY / Cooper) tied the game up with an RBI single in the bottom half of the first.
- Trevecca retook the lead with 3 runs in the second inning.
- The Trojans padded their lead with an 8 spot in the 4th. (12-1)
- TNU added another run in the 5th and 8 more in the 6th to make it 21 to 1.
Game 2: Thomas More 8-4
- In the bottom of the first, first year Sam Bond (St. Leon, IN / East Central) hit a 2 RBI double to give the Saints a lead.
- Also in the first, Derek Atwood hit an RBI single to bring home Bond to make it 3 to 0.
- Trevecca Nazarene scored one in the top of the 4th on a wild pitch to make it 3 to 1.
- A two run home run by TNU tied the game in the top of the 5th.
- Derek Atwood connects on a two run home run in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 5 to 3 game.
- TNU scores a run in the top of the 6th to make it a one run game.
- Gavin Vogelgesang hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 6th to make it a 6 to 4 game.
- Gavin Pearson added to the lead with an RBI single to bring Vogelgesang home (7-4).
- Gavin Pearson drove in an insurance run in the 8th to make it 8 to 4.
Game 1:
- Gavin Pearson went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and a RBI.
- Graduate student Derek Atwood (Burlington, KY / Conner) went 1 for 2 with a double and a walk.
- Junior Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier) went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Game 2:
- Senior Brady Baldock (Burlington, KY / St. Henry) went 2 for 5 at the plate with a run scored.
- Derek Atwood went 2 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBIs.
- Gavin Pearson went 4 for 5 with a double, triple and 2 RBIs. He recorded his 200th career hit in the game.
- Sam Bond went 1 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs.
Game 1:
- Senior Mason Berger (Cincinnati, OH / Elder) got the start on senior day and tossed one pitch in a return from an arm injury.
- Senior Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, OH / Elder) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing 9 runs on 9 hits. He struck out 4.
- Sophomore Cody Watkins (Cincinnati, OH / Lakota East) pitched 0.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 1 hit.
- Junior George Donohoe (Villa Hills, KY / Immaculate Conception) pitched 2.0 innings, allowing 9 runs on 5 hits and striking out 4.
- Sophomore Tony Spangler (Springboro, OH / Springboro) pitched 1.0 innings, and struck out 1.
Game 2:
- Junior Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, OH / Oak Hills) got the start and pitched 6.0 innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and striking out 4. He earned the win in the game.
- First year Ethan Stone (Hamilton, OH / Hamilton) pitched 3 innings, not allowing a hit or run. He struck out 1 and picked up the save.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday (May, 1st) in their season finale against Miami Hamilton. First pitch is set for 5:00 PM.
