Baseball Falls to Lake Erie in Day One of Series

(FLORENCE, KY)-Thomas More University's baseball team fell 9-4 in game one and 4-3 (8-innings) in game two to Lake Erie. The Saints overall record falls to 11-30 and 4-22 in conference.


Game 1: Lake Erie 9-4

• Lake Erie scored one run in the top of the first and two runs in the top of the second inning (0-3).
• Junior AJ Enginger hit a ground rule double over the right field fence to score graduate student Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner) in the bottom of the second inning (1-3).
• Lake Erie scored one run in the top of the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the seventh inning (1-9).
• In the bottom of the eighth inning, AJ Enginger hit through the left side to score sophomore Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) to make it a 2-9 game. Junior Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) singled through the right side to send home first year Tanner Gray (Williamstown, Ky./Williamstown) 3-9. Junior Ben Duncan (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) doubled to right field to score AJ Enginger to put the Saints within five (4-9).

Game 2: Lake Erie 4-3 (8-innings)

• First year Sam Bond (St. Leon, Ind./East Central) single through the left side to score Ben Duncan to give the Saints the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
• Lake Erie scored one run in the top of the seventh inning and three in the top of the eighth inning (1-4).
• Gunner Kalkhoff scores from a ground out by junior Derek Marinucci (Canton, Mich./Divine Child) to make it a 2-4 game in the bottom of the eighth. First year Ty Cunningham (Fairfield, Ohio/Faifield) singled up the middle to send in AJ Enginger to put the Saints within one (3-4).

Game 1:

• Gavin Vogelgesang was 2-5 with one RBI.
• Gunner Kalkhoff went 2-5 and scored one run.
• Derek Atwood was 2-4 and scored one run.
• AJ Enginger went 2-3 with two RBIs and one run.

Game 2:

• Ben Duncan was 2-5 and scored one run.

Game 1:

• Junior Jackson Grimmelsman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs with seven earned off 11 hits and struck out five.
• First year Nolan Krekeler (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller) pitched 0.2 innings, allowing no runs off one hit and struck out one.
• Sophomore Cody Watkins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run off three hits and struck out four.
• Sophomore Jack Rutz (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no runs off one hit and struck out one.

Game 2: 

• First year Jacob Murphy (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing no runs off four hits and struck out four.
• Senior Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 2.0 innings, allowing four runs with three earned off three hits.

The Saints return tomorrow (April 21) against Lake Erie in a double header beginning at noon at Thomas More Stadium.
