Gels Surpasses 500 Career Strikeouts in Midweek Series

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY)-Thomas More University's softball team split with Kentucky State on Thursday afternoon (April 18) in midweek non-conference game. The Saints took game one 6-0 and fell 6-2 in game two. The Saints overall record is now 12-28 and 6-12 in conference.

How they scored
Game 1: Thomas More 6-0
  • In the bottom of the third inning, first year Anna Greenwell (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) scored first year Adi Johnson (Ross, Ohio/Ross) on a bunt to put the Saints on the board (1-0). Junior Josie Wefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) doubled to the left field fence to send in Anna Greenwell to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Senior Delaney Kemper (Williamstown, Ky./Williamstown) hit a ground rule double over the right center fence to score Anna Greenwell and extend the Saints lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Josie Wefer scored on a error by the third baseman off a hit ball by graduate student Becca Mowen (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) (4-0).
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Anna Greenwell crushed a ball to the left field for a double to score sophomore Ashtyn Elbe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) to put the Saints up 5-0. Adi Johnson scored on an error by the third baseman off a ball hit by Josie Wefer (6-0).
Game 2: 
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Ashtyn Elbe scored on a throwing error by the center fielder to home plate off a hit ball from graduate student Hailey McAdoo (Cincinnati, Ohio) to put the Saints on the board 1-0. Hailey McAdoo would then score on an infield single hit by senior Kai Dickerson (Walton, Ky./Ryle) to make it a 2-0 game. 
  • Kentucky State scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning and scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning (2-6).

Game 1:
  • Anna Greenwell went 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs, one double, and scored two runs.
  • Josie Wefer was 2-3 with two RBIs, one double, and scored one run.
  • Adi Johnson went 1-1 and scored two runs.
Game 2:
Game 1:
  • Graduate student Annika Gels (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing no runs off four hits and struck out 11 to surpass 500 career strikeouts.
Game 2:
  • Senior Cassidy King (Hubber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three earned run off two hits and struck out three.
  • First year Olivia Dumm (Williamsport, Ohio/Westfall) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing three earned runs off six hits and struck out three.

The Saints return to action on Saturday (April 20) against Walsh in North Canton, Ohio in a double header beginning at 1:00 pm.
