Baseball Falters In Doubleheader At Pikeville

(PIKEVILLE, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the University of Pikeville Bears this afternoon, 3-1 and 9-8. Game two went into 10 innings where the Bears would walk it off. The Saints are now 25-14 overall this season and 12-8 in the Mid-South Conference.
 
 How they scored

Game One: University of Pikeville defeats Thomas More, 3-1.
  • The Bears struck first with a single run in the bottom of the first to grab a 1-0 lead.
  • The Saints had runners in scoring position on a pair of occasions but couldn't bring anyone in until the sixth inning.
  • Brennan Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) would eventually come up with a huge single to center field to bring in the tying run, Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper), who singled to begin the inning.
  • The Bears would score a pair in the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Saints had runners on first and second in the seventh but couldn't bring in the tying runs.
Game 2: Pikeville defeats Thomas More, 9-8.
  • Thomas More took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Vogelgesang led the game off with a home run to left field, before a Pearson walk and Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) hit, and Bears error would bring in Pearson.
  • Vogelgesang would bring in another run in the top of the 2nd with a single to left field that made it 3-1.
  • The Bears would score six unanswered runs to take a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the 2nd.
  • The Saints would grab another two runs in the third on a Bailey Martin home run and AJ Enginger (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 7-5.
  • The Bears would take it to the ninth up 8-6 after they scored one in the sixth and Vogelgesang hit a sacrifice fly for his third RBI to bring it to that score.
  • The Saints tied it in the ninth with a Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) fielder's choice, after the Bears couldn't get an out on a ground ball and an Enginger single to left field.
  • The Bears won it in the 10th on a single up the middle.

 
 
Game One:
  • Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), Pearson, and Brennan Martin all had a base hit for the Saints, with Martin gathering the RBI.
  • The Saints earned five walks.
  • Pearson scored the run for Thomas More.
 
Game Two:
  • Five Saints had multi-hit games.
  • Bailey Martin had a season-high four hits.
  • Vogelgesang had a season-high three RBI.
  • Bailey Martin and Enginger both had two RBI.

 

Game One:
  • Sophomore Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) pitched 5.2 innings for the Saints, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
  • Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio/La Salle) picked up the final two outs for the Saints, striking out both Bears.
 
Game Two:
  • Landen Scott (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) gave up six runs, five earned over 1.1 innings, striking out two.
  • Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) threw 0.2 innings, giving up an unearned run while striking out one.
  • Mason Berger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) threw 1.1 innings without giving up a run and struck out one.
  • Kellen Sandhas (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) gave up one run over 2.2 innings while striking out two.
  • Justin Bierbaum struck out five batters over 3.1 innings, allowing one run.

Thomas More returns to Thomas More Stadium for a single game against Miami University-Hamilton on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. They beat the Harriers 6-5 in 13 innings earlier this season.
