Baseball Drops Both Games In Doubleheader With Cumberlands (Ky.)

(FLORENCE, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball team lost both games in their doubleheader Saturday afternoon against the University of the Cumberlands at Thomas More Stadium, 9-6 and 17-2. The Saints overall record falls to 27-16 and they are now 13-10 in the Mid-South Conference.

 How they scored

Cumberlands (Ky.) defeats Thomas More, 9-6:
  • The Patriots jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game one after three innings before the Saints tried to crawl back into it.
  • Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner) hit his fifth homerun of the season to left center field to get the Saints on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • The Patriots would make it a 9-1 game heading into the bottom of the fifth.
  • An Atwood RBI double and a Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) pinch-hit, two RBI double cut the lead to 9-4.
  • The Saints would add a pair in the seventh off an Atwood RBI groundout and a Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) sacrifice fly, but it wouldn't be enough in the 9-6 loss.
Cumberlands (Ky.) defeats Thomas More, 17-2:
  • The Saints got on the board first in the bottom of the first off a clutch, two-out, two RBI single up the middle by Caruso.
  • However, the Patriots would score 17 unanswered runs throughout the remainder of the game.

 

Game 1:
  • Atwood led the team with two hits and had a game-high three RBI, and now leads the team with 41 runs batted in this season.
  • Kalkhoff had two RBI.
Game 2:
  • Caruso led the Saints with three hits at the plate and had both RBI.
  • Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) and Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) both had a pair of hits in the game.

 

Game 1:
  • Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) allowed five runs in 2.2 innings, striking out one.
  • Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) allowed four runs in two innings, striking out one.
  • Hunter Nantz (London, Ky./North Laurel) got one out.
  • Jack Perdue (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) threw two scoreless innings and struck out three batters.
Game 2:
  • Kellen Sandhas (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) allowed seven runs in 2.1 innings, striking out one.
  • Landen Scott (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs and striking out four.
  • Conner Ryle (Union, Ky./Larry A. Ryle/Frontier Community College) went 0.2 innings and gave up five runs.
  • Tony Spangler (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) got one out, striking him out while giving up a run.
