Baseball Secures Big Win Over #9 Cumberlands (Ky.)

(FLORENCE, Ky.)-Thomas More University's baseball team defeated #9 Cumberlands (Ky.) 4-3 on Friday afternoon (April 14). The Saints overall record improves to 27-14 and 13-8 in conference.
How they scored
  • In the bottom of the first inning, senior Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) hit a deep sac fly to left field to score sophomore Gavin Vogelgesanf (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) to put the Saints on the board 1-0.
  • Junior Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) scored off a hard hit ball to deep center field by Gavin Vogelgesang to extend the Saints lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Cumberlands scored one run in the top of the third inning (2-1).
  • The Patriots left fielder dove for a ball hit by Brady Baldock in the bottom of the sixth, but dropped it to allow senior Noah Weingartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) to score (3-1). Gavin Vogelgesang would step up and hit a sac fly to right field to send in first year Jeremy Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) to put the Saints up 4-1.
  • Cumberlands scored two runs in the top of the eight to make it a one run game (4-3).
  • Gavin Vogelgesang went 2-3 with a double, two RBIs, and scored one run.
  • Junior Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Cooper) was 2-4 at the plate.
  • Sophomore Ben Duncan (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) was 2-3 with a double.
  • Senior Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner) went 1-2.
  • Junior Mychal Grogan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs with two being earned off of five hits, and struck out six.
  • Graduate student Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio/La Salle) pitched 2 innings, giving up no runs off of two hits, and struck out two.
