Baseball Uses 13 Hits To Blow Past Kentucky State

(FLORENCE, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball team cruised to a 14-4 victory over the Kentucky State University Thorobreds Tuesday afternoon at Thomas More Stadium. The Saints improve to 21-11 overall this season.

 How they scored
  • Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner) got the scoring started for Thomas More in the bottom of the first with a three-run homerun to left field.
  • Atwood is now tied for the team-lead with four homeruns this season.
  • Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) would follow it up a few batters later with an RBI double down the left field line to bring the score to 4-0 after one inning.
  • The Saints would score another four runs in the second inning.
  • With two outs, sophomore Brennan Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) lined a ball over the right field wall for a grand slam. This was his third homerun of the season.
  • The Saints put another four spot up in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • The first two runs came in on walks, while the third came in on a fielder's choice.
  • The final came on a Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) single down the left field line that bounced off third base to bring in the run.
  • The final two runs to secure the run-rule came in the seventh inning.
  • Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) hit a single up the middle to bring in Tucker Gray (Williamstown, Ky./Williamstown), who had doubled earlier in the inning.
  • Baldock ended the game with a single over the second baseman for the winning RBI.

 
  • Both Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) and Baldock had a pair of hits to lead the Saints.
  • They had 13 hits as a team, with nine different Saints getting one hit.
  • Brennan Martin led the team with four RBI, while Atwood had three and Baldock had two.
  • Atwood scored three runs, while Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) and Jeremy Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) scored two.
  • Pearson walked twice.

 
  • Jack Perdue (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) threw three solid innings to start the game, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out two batters.
  • Jackson Grimmelsman picked up his second victory of the season after throwing four innings.
  • He allowed two runs, both unearned, while striking out six and walking two.
