Saints Take A Pair From Trinity Christian On Windy Afternoon

(FLORENCE, Ky.) - The Thomas More University baseball team defeated the Trinity Christian College Trolls in both games on a windy Thursday afternoon in their home opener, 12-3 and 11-10.

How they scored

Game 1:
  • A Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) double allowed the Saints to strike first in the bottom of the second, bringing in Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner).
  • The Trolls used a triple and double in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Thomas More scored six runs over the following two innings to take the lead for good at 7-2.
  •  The Saints would pile it on, with five more runs in the bottom of the sixth and would go on to win 12-3
 
Game 2:
  • The Trolls grabbed a 4-0 lead after two innings.
  • The Saints would pick up a pair of runs in the top of the third on Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) and Derek Atwood singles to make it 4-2.
  • The damage was done in a seven-run bottom of the fourth for Thomas More, led by several Trinity Christian errors.
  • The Trolls fought back however, scoring six unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 10-9 lead.
  • The Saints would win it in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) walked and Bailey Martin singled him over.
  • AJ Enginger (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) would reach on an error that allowed Pearson to score the tying run.
  • Caruso would hit the game winning sacrifice fly into center field to give the Saints an 11-10 victory.

Game 1:
  • Junior Mychal Grogan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) threw a complete game, allowing three runs and just four hits while striking out nine.
Game 2
  • Junior Landen Scott (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) pitched three innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
  • Sophomore Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) pitched two innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out three.
  • Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) gave up three runs and three hits in 0.2 innings before Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio/La Salle) shut the door on his first win of the season. He gave up no runs or hits in 1.1 innings.

The Saints play host to the Trolls once again tomorrow afternoon at Thomas More Stadium, with first pitch of game one at Noon.
