Saints Get a Walk-off From Martin to Split Doubleheader with Trinity Christian

(FLORENCE, Ky.)-Thomas More University baseball team split Friday's (February 10th) doubleheader with Trinity Christian to move to a 4-3 overall record on the season. The Saints dropped game 1 today by a score of 2-0, but rallied back as they took a 7-6 walk-off victory thanks toa 2 out, 2 RBI double by sophomore Brennan Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio / Elder).

How they scored
Game 1:
  • Trinity Christian scored once in third off a single to push across the first run of the game. 1-0 Trinity Christian.
  • Trinity Christian struck again in the 5th with a fielders choice ground ball that led to a run scoring. 2-0 Trinity Christian.
Game 2:
  • Trinity Christian came out swinging and plated 3 runs in the top of the first inning. 3-0 Trinity Christian.
  • The Trolls added another run off an RBI single to push the lead to 4. 4-0 Trinity Christian.
  • In the bottom of the second, Senior Cooper Daniels (Franklin, Ohio / Franklin) brings senior Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio / Rootstown) home to get the Saints on the scoreboard. 4-1 Trinity Christian.
  • Also in the bottom of the second, sophomore Gavin Volgelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) singles to bring home junior Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky. / St. Henry). 4-2 Trinity Christian.
  • In the bottom of the third, graduate student Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky. / Simon Kenton) takes a ball over the left field wall for a home run and making it a one run ballgame. 4-3 Trinity Christian.
  • In the top of the 4th Trinity Christian plates 2 more runs to stretch the lead back to 3. 6-3 Trinity Christian.
  • In the bottom of the 7th inning, sophomore AJ Enginger (Hamilton, Ohio / Badin) singles and brings home Gavin Volgelgesang. 6-4 Trinity Christian.
  • Junior Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky. / Cooper) scores from third on a wild pitch to make it a 1 run ball game. 6-5 Trinity Christian.
  • With 2 outs and a full count in the 7th, Brennan Martin hits a double down the right field line to bring home Enginger and first year Jeremy Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio) to win the game for the Saints. 7-6 Thomas More.

Game 1:
  • Senior Noah Weingartner (Cincinnati, Ohio / LaSalle) went 1-1 at the plate, as he singled and also recorded a walk.
  • AJ Enginger extended his hit streak to 5 as he went 1 for 3 in the game.
  • Bailey Martin extended his hit streak to 6 as he went 1 for 3 in the game. Also recorded a stolen base.

  • Junior Mason Berger (Cincinnati, Ohio / Elder) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 1 earned run off of 7 hits, and striking out six.
  • Fifth year Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio / LaSalle) pitched 0.1 innings for the Saints.

  • Senior Hunter Nantz (London, Ky. / North Laurel) pitched 1.0 innings, allowing 4 earned runs off of 5 hits, and recording 1 strike out.
  • First year Jack Perdue (Louisville, Ky. / Christian Academy) pitched 3.0 innings, allowing 1 earned run off of 4 hits. Also recorded 3 strike outs.
  • First year Kellen Sandhas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Elder) picked up the win as he pitched 3.0 shut out innings, giving up only 1 hit and striking out 3.
