Saints Blow Out Campbellsville In MSC Opener

(CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball team blew past the Campbellsville University Tigers in their Mid-South Conference opener tonight, 17-5. The Saints are now 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the MSC.

 How they scored
  • The Saints put up four runs in the first inning.
  • They loaded the bases with no outs.
  • Sophomore Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) scored the first run on a wild pitch.
  • Sophomore AJ Enginger (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) then brought in a run due to a Tiger error to make it 2-0.
  • A Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner) single to center field brought the score to 3-0.
  • The final run of the inning came on a Brennan Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) sacrifice fly.
  • An Atwood single to right field brought in two more runs in the second, making the score 6-2.
  • The Saints grabbed a run on an error in the third, before a Vogelgesang single brought in the eighth run and a Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) bases-loaded walk pushed it to 9-2.
  • A Tiger error allowed the Saints to bring in a 10th run in the fifth.
  • Bailey Martin hit a triple in the seventh for another pair of RBI, before another Campbellsville mishap allowed a run to come in and bring the score to 13-4.
  • The Saints scored on a wild pitch before Bailey Martin hit a three-run home run to left center to make the final score 17-5. This was Martin's third homer of the season.

 
  • Bailey Martin tied with Atwood for a team-high three hits, while leading the team with six RBI. Atwood had three RBI.
  • Also gathering multi-hit games were Cooper Daniels (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) and Vogelgesang.
  • Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) walked four times and had one hit.

 
  • Only three of the Saints five runs allowed were earned.
  • Junior Mychal Grogan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) struck out three over 5.1 innings, allowing four runs, two earned.
  • Junior Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) allowed one run over 1.2 innings, striking out one.
  • First-year Jack Perdue (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) threw the last inning and struck out the side on 18 pitches.

Thomas More finishes their series with Campbellsville in a double-header tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. Game one is slated for 7 innings while game two will be 9 innings.
