(LEBANON, Tenn.) – The Thomas More University football team opened the 2020-21 season today (Friday, February 12, 2021) as it defeated Cumberland University, 19-13, in a Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division game in Lebanon, Tennessee.
- Thomas More took a 7-0 lead with 5:35 to play in the first quarter when senior running back Monalo Caldwell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) scored on a six-yard run and sophomore place kicker Alexander Haley (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) converted the point-after-attempt.
- The Phoenix tied the game a 7-7 when Treylon Sheppard scored on a one-yard run and Austin Nunley added the PAT.
- Haley made a 22-yard field goal with 4:39 to play in the second quarter to give the Saints a 10-7 lead.
- Thomas More extended the lead to 13-7 when Haley converted a 30-yard field goal with 4:47 to play in the third quarter.
- Cumberland took a 14-13 lead with 9:29 to play in the game when Sheppard scored on a one-yard run and Nunley added the PAT.
- The Saints took a 19-13 lead when sophomore quarterback Jay Volpenhein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) scored on a 34-yard touchdown run and the two-point attempt failed with 3:06 to play in the game.
- Thomas More moves to 1-0, while Cumberland falls to 0-1.
- The Saints out-gained the Phoenix 391 yards (171 rushing/220 passing) to 195 yards (110 rushing/85 passing).
- Volpenhein was 18-of-34 passing for 220 yards with an interception, while rushing the ball 14 times for 91 yards and a touchdown.
- Caldwell had 22 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown.
- Junior wide receiver Craig Wills (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had five catches for 66 yards.
- Sophomore wide receiver Roques Dowdy (Athens, Ga./Oconee County) had two catches for 49 yards.
- Sophomore linebacker Del Thomas (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) had eight tackles (five solo/three assisted).
- Junior linebacker Peyton Van Horn (Hebron, Ky./Conner) had eight tackles (four solo/four assisted), including one sack and a one and a half tackles for a loss.
- Senior defensive back Brian Manning, Jr. (Burlington, Ky./Conner) finished with five tackles (four solo/one assisted), including one tackle for a loss.
- The Saints are scheduled to return to action next Friday (February 19) when they host Campbellsville University at 7 p.m. at BB&T Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
