Thomas More Rallies to Defeat Campbellsville, 48-27, in Home Opener

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More University football team out-scored Campbellsville 42-6 over the final three quarters today (Saturday, February 20, 2021) to post a 48-27 win in a Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division game at BB&T Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

  • Campbellsville took an early 7-0 lead when Deuce Shreve connected on a 75-yard touchdown pass to Tate Pringle and Devin Neally added the point-after-attempt with 14:43 to play in the opening quarter.
  • The Saints cut the lead to 7-6 with 8:04 to play in the quarter when senior wide receiver Charles Gaines (Elsmere, Ky./Lloyd Memorial) scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Jay Volpenhein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) and junior kicker Alexander Haley's (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) PAT failed.
  • Campbellsville scored on a 75-yard touchdown pass and a with 7:15 to play in the quarter and a 12-yard touchdown pass with 3:48 to play in the quarter to lead 21-6 after one quarter.

  • Volpenhein connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Silas Ingram (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) and Haley added the PAT to cut the lead to 21-13 with 7:09 to play in the quarter.
  • With 1:45 to play in the second quarter Gaines caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Volpenhein and Haley added the PAT to make the score 21-20.
  • Thomas More took a 27-21 lead into halftime when junior linebacker Peyton Van Horn (Hebron, Ky./Conner) returned an interception 36-yard for a touchdown and Haley added the PAT with 1:26 to play.

  • Campbellsville tied the game a 27-27 with 11:07 to play in the third quarter when Patrick Oden scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass and Neally's PAT was blocked.
  • First-year defensive back Kolton Reeves (Paducah, Ky./McCracken County) returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown and Haley added the PAT to give the Saints a 34-27 lead with 5:21 to play in the third quarter.

  • The Saints extended the lead to 41-27 with 14:12 to play in the game when Reeves returned another interception 25-yards for a touchdown and Haley added the PAT.
  • Volpenhein connected on an eight-yard touchdown pass to sophomore running back Austin Bowling (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Lawrenceburg) and Haley added the PAT with 5:04 to play for the final score of 48-27.

  • Thomas More improve to 2-0 and Campbellsville falls to 0-1.
  • The Saints out-gained the Tigers 411 yards (139 rushing/272 passing) to 348 yards (35 rushing/313 passing).
  • Gaines finished with seven catches for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Volpenhein was 15-of-29 passing for 272 yard and four touchdowns.
  • Junior wide receiver Craig Wills (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had three catches for 75 yards.
  • Senior running back Monalo Caldwell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) had 13 carries for 43 yards.
  • Reeves had five tackles (three solo/two assisted), two interceptions returned for a touchdown and one fumble recovery.
  • Sophomore linebacker Del Thomas (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) had nine tackles (two solo/seven assisted).
  • Van Horn finished with eight tackles (four solo/four assisted), including a sack and one interception returned for a touchdown.
  • First-year defensive lineman Tanner Lawrence (Melbourne, Ky./Campbell County) had eight tackles (four solo/three assisted), including one sack and two and a half tackles for a loss.
  • First-year Colton Sandhas (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) finished with seven tackles (four solo/three assisted), including a tackle for a loss and had two forced fumbles.

  • Thomas More is scheduled to return to action next Friday (February 26) when it hosts Bethel (Tenn.) University at 7 p.m. at BB&T Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
