Football Pulls Off Upset of RV Cumberlands

Crestview Hills, Ky. - The football program at Thomas More University defeated receiving votes University of the Cumberlands by a score of 26-9. With the win the Saints improve to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Mid-South Conference play.

  • Senior running back Monalo Caldwell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) kicked off the homecoming festivities early running through the Patriots defense for a 14 yard touchdown, senior Alexander Haley (Lebanon, Ohio / Lebanon) would convert the extra point to go up 7-0 3:20 into the game.
  • Sophomore quarterback Jay Volpenhein (Cincinnati, Ohio / Anderson) would find junior receiver Roques Dowdy (Athens, Ga. / Oconee County) on a 20 yard dart to increase Thomas More's lead to 13-0.

  • Sophomore quarterback Rae'Von Vaden (Louisville, Ky. / Marion C. Moore) found senior receiver Charles Gaines Jr. (Elsmere, Ky. / Lloyd Memorial) in the back of the endzone for a six yard touchdown, growing the lead to 20-0 after Haley's extra point.

  • Junior Craig Wills Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) rushed for 26 yards on an end around that found the pylon to give Thomas More a 26-0 lead.
  • Ben Nixon found Eli Evans on a 38 yard bomb to give the Patriots their first points of the game, kicker Trip Holloway converted the extra point to cut into the Saints lead at 26-7.
  • Cumberlands recorded a safety on the kickoff to cut Thomas More's lead to 26-9.

  • The fourth quarter was a stalemate for both teams as the final came to 26-9 in favor of the Saints.

  • Caldwell was the leading rusher for Thomas More with 59 yards on nine attempts and a touchdown.
  • Gaines Jr. was the leading receiver for the Saints with 84 yards on six catches and a touchdown.
  • Sophomore defensive back Kolton Reeves (Paducah, Ky. / McCracken County) recorded an interception that killed Cumberlands momentum after the safety.
  • Junior Del Thomas (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) led the team in tackles with a game high nine tackles and two tackles for a loss.
  • Thomas More had 21 first downs to Cumberlands 11.

The football will return to the field next Saturday (October 23) when they travel to Georgetown, Kentucky to take on Georgetown College at 1:30 P.M. ET.
