#22 Saints Upset #2 Campbellsville, 69-58, in Mid-South Semifinals

(BOWLING GREEN, Ky.) – The 22nd-ranked and fourth-seeded Thomas More University women's basketball team upset second-ranked and top-seeded Campbellsville University, 69-58, today (Sunday, March 8, 2020) in the semifinal round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Bowling Green Arena in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

  • Campbellsville jumped out to an 11-6 run with 3:29 to play in the first quarter when Sammy Rogers made a three-pointer.
  • Thomas More closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 15-13 lead after one quarter when senior guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) made a three-pointer with 30-seconds to play in the quarter.
  • The Saints scored the first seven points of the second period to take a 21-13 lead with 7:53 to play in the quarter when senior forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) made a field goal.
  • The Tigers answered with a 5-1 run capped by a field goal by Madison Faulkner to cut the lead to 22-18 with 5:21 to play in the second quarter.
  • Saner made a three-pointer with 3:44 to play in the second quarter to cap a 5-0 run and extend the lead to 27-18.
  • Campbellsville closed the second quarter on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 31-27 at halftime when Courtney Pritchett made a field goal with 1:06 to play in the quarter.
  • Thomas More shot 52.1 percent (12-of-23) from the field, including 57.1 percent (four-of-seven) from behind the three point line.
  • Saner had eight points and one rebounds in the first half.
  • First-year guard Summer Secrist (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) added eight points, two rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot and one steal.

  • The Saints opened the third quarter on a 5-2 run to extend the lead to 36-29 with 9:01 to play in the quarter when first-year guard Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) made a three-pointer.
  • Campbellsville responded with a 12-0 run capped by a Faulkner field goal to take a 41-36 lead with 4:58 to play in the third quarter.
  • Thomas More closed out the third quarter on a 9-4 run to tie the game at 45-45 after three quarters when Hurst made one-of-two free-throws with 27-seconds to play in the quarter.
  • Campbellsville opened the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 49-45 lead with 9:00 to play in the game when Savannah Gregory made two free-throws.
  • The Saints dominated the rest of the game as they closed out the game on a 24-9 run capped by two free-throws by first-year guard Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) with 17-seconds to play to post the 69-58 victory.
  • Saner had 12 points, one rebound and one steal in the second half.
  • Hurst had 12 points, three assists, two rebounds and one steal.

  • Thomas More improves to 22-9 on the season.
  • Campbellsville falls to 29-3.
  • For the game, the Saints shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the field, including 55 percent (11-of-20) from behind the three-point arc and shot 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free-throw line.
  • Saner was named the Player of the Game by the Mid-South as she had 20 points, two rebounds and one steal.
  • Hurst finished with 12 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
  • Secrist added 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
  • Barth had nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and one steal.
  • Schultz finished with eight points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.

  • The Saints advance to the championship game of the Mid-South Conference Tournament to face  ninth-ranked and third-seeded Shawnee State University tomorrow (Monday, March 9) at 6:30 p.m. Eastern/5:30 p.m. Central at the Bowling Green Arena.
