Women's Basketball Notch Top-10 Win in Overtime

(Portsmouth, Ohio) – The eighth-ranked women's basketball team at Thomas More University took down seventh-ranked Shawnee State University by a score of 72-65 to move to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-South Conference.

  • Sophomore guard Summer Secrist (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) started the scoring for the Lady Saints at the 6:50 mark in the first quarter, making the score 7-2 Shawnee State.

  • Senior Briana McNutt (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) made a layup with 2:00 minutes left in the first to give TMU their first lead at 11-10. Shawnee State would regain the lead at the end of the first to make it 14-13 SSU.

  • Sophomore Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) hit a three-pointer to start the scoring in the second for Thomas More giving them a 16-14 lead.

  • Sophomore Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) gave TMU their biggest lead of the half at 8 with a floater with 1:02 remaining in the half. Thomas More would take a 32-25 lead into half.

  • Mcnutt kicked off the scoring in the third period with a layup making the score 52-46 in favor of the Lady Saints.
  • Junior Taylor Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made a layup as time expired in the third giving Thomas More a 52-44 lead heading into the last quarter.
  • Secrist would find a hole in the defense for a layup to start the scoring in the fourth making the score 54-49 TMU.
  • Sophomore Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) would come up with a key block for the Lady Saints with 0.1 remaining in regulation to keep the score tied at 63, sending the game to overtime.

  • Barth would make a three-pointer with 2:04 remaining in overtime to give Thomas More a 68-66 lead.
  • Barth and First-Year Maggie Jones (Piner, Ky./Simon Kenton) would finish the scoring with free throws to give TMU a 72-67 win.

  • Barth led all scorers with 22 points and pulled in 6 rebounds.
  • Simon scored 12 points and brought down 4 boards.
  • Secrist led TMU in rebounding with9 and in blocks with 2.
  • TMU bench had 16 points to SSU's 10.

The Saints will return to action on December 31, where they will faceoff against the University of Pikeville at the Connor Convocation Center with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
