Box Score 2 (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College volleyball team opened the season with a split today (Friday, September 2, 2011) on the first day of the Thomas More Invitational at the Connor Convocation Center. The Saints defeated Transylvania, 3-1, in the first match, but fell, 3-0, to defending national champion Calvin College.
In the first match of the day, the Saints won by the scores of 25-15, 13-25, 25-23 and 25-13. The Saints were led offensively by senior middle blocker Katie Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) with 12 kills and one service ace and freshman outside hitter Karsen Cronin (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) with 10 kills. Senior setter Michelle Clifford (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) finished the match with 39 assists. Defensively, Sullivan had five total blocks, while freshman defensive specialist Kelsey Castiglioni (Harrison Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) had 30 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Brittany Rohrkasse (Mason, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) added 21 digs and freshman defensive specialist Christina Brackett (Louisville, Ky./Seneca) had 23 digs.
In the nightcap, the Saints fell to Calvin by the scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-18. Offensively, Sullivan had seven kills, while Clifford had 14 assists and junior setter Tori Verville (Edgewood, Ky./Holy Cross) had 13 assists. Castiglioni led the team in digs with six.
The Saints return to action tomorrow for the second day of the Thomas More Invitational as they play Hiram College at 10 a.m. and Otterbein University at 2 p.m.
