Saints Take Two To Start Their Season On A High Note

(Upland, IN) – The Thomas More University Saints women's volleyball team hit the court for their first matches of the 2022 season, defeating Concordia University (Mich.) 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19) in their first match and Lawrence Tech 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 16-25, 25-23) in their second match.

Match One - Thomas More Defeats Concordia University (Mich.), 3-1

The Saints jumped out to a 15-10 lead in set one before the Cardinals used a 14-3 run to take the momentum and a 24-18 set lead. A few Cardinal errors kept the Saints in it, but they dropped the set 25-21.

Set two saw both teams locked up at 16-16, before Concordia pushed to a 20-16 lead with a 4-0 flurry. However, four Ally Albrinck kills fueled an 8-0 Saints run to give them a 24-20 lead in their eventual 25-21 set win to tie the match at 1-1.

Thomas More held the momentum from the start of set three, jumping out to a 14-9 lead and never looking back in a 25-15 victory and a 2-1 match lead. The final set was all square at 16-16, before the Saints made a 6-1 push to take a 22-17 lead. A pair of kills from Sawyer Lorentz paired with an Albrinck kill put the match away for Thomas More and moved them to 1-0.

  • Lorentz, Albrinck, and Sydney Hilderbran all finished with double-digit kills for the Saints. This is the first time since Oct. 8, 2021, against Bethel (Tenn.) that the Saints had three or more players finish with 10 or more kills.
  • Sam McClanahan dished out 41 assists and had 11 digs while Asia Ferrando led with 16 digs.
  • The Saints hit a solid .291 combined over the final two sets to put the match away.

Match Two - Thomas More Defeats Lawrence Tech University, 3-1

The Saints jumped out to a 14-8 lead in set one before the Blue Devils began to get back into the set. They used a 12-7 run to cut the lead to just one at 21-20. A pair of Albrinck kills helped push the Saints to a 25-22 set win.

Set two was all tied up at 24-24 before a Lawrence Tech error and an Ebony Gomez kill won the set 26-24 and gave Thomas More a 2-0 match lead. After leading 16-12 in set three, the Blue Devils took complete control of the set and stayed in the match with a 13-0 flurry to win the set 25-16 and make it 2-1 in the match.

The Saints led 23-17 in the fourth set before Lawrence Tech made things interesting. They used a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 24-23 before an Albrinck kill sealed the victory for the Saints and a 2-0 day to start their season.

The Saints are back in action tomorrow afternoon at noon when they play Spring Arbor before ending the tournament against host Taylor University at 4:30 p.m.

 

  • In her second match with the Saints, Gomez put up a team-high 16 kills while Jess Gearries had a career-high 15 and Albrinck added 10.
  • McClanahan had a double-double with 51 assists and 17 digs while Ferrando led with 21 digs, and Ruthie Neu had 11.
