Baseball Beats Shawnee State Twice Saturday Afternoon

(FLORENCE, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball team beat the Shawnee State University Bears a pair of times this afternoon in Mid-South Conference action, 5-4 and a 12-2 eight inning run rule. They are now 19-11 overall this season and 8-5 in the MSC.

 How they scored
 
Game 1: Thomas More defeats Shawnee State, 5-4
  • The Saints scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) both provided the RBI's.
  • Vogelgesang's came on a fielder's choice while Pearson poked a ball through the right side of the infield to make it 2-0.
  • The Bears would score four unanswered runs.
  • Pearson had another RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3 heading into the seventh.
  • Six Saints came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and four of them came away with base hits.
  • It started with a Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) single, before Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) followed up with an RBI single to tie the game.
  • With two outs, AJ Enginger (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) hit a single to move Baldock to third base.
  • Pinch hitter Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) followed Enginger with a game-winning RBI single up the middle for the 5-4 victory.
 
Game 2: Thomas More defeats Shawnee State, 12-2
  • After a Bears homerun gave them the early lead, the Saints piled up the runs.
  • They scored four over the first two innings, with one coming via an error.
  • The three RBI knocks came from Noah Weingartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle), Pearson, and Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton).
  • The Saints would score another four runs in the fifth to make the score 8-2.
  • Kalkhoff had an RBI walk, Enginger hit a sacrifice fly, and Baldock hit a two-RBI double to left center field.
  • Two more came in during the sixth inning on a two-RBI Enginger single up the middle.
  • The final two runs came from a Bailey Martin double down the left field line and a Vogelgesang single through the left side of the infield to secure the run rule.

 

Game 1:
  • Pearson and Caruso led the Saints with a pair of hits each.
  • Pearson also led with two RBI.
  • Enginger walked a pair of times.
 
Game 2:
  • Bailey Martin, Enginger and Baldock all had three hits.
  • Enginger led with three RBI, while Bailey Martin and Baldock had two.
  • Baldock and Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner) each scored two runs.

 

Game 1:
  • Mychal Grogan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) threw 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out four Bears.
  • Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio/La Salle) came in and threw 1.2 innings of relief and picked up his second win of the season.
  • He struck out two Bears.
 
Game 2:
  • Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned his fourth win of the season, throwing seven solid innings, and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight.
  • Landen Scott (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) threw the final inning and struck out one batter.
