Baseball's Explosive Offense Scores 14, Defeats IUPUC

(FLORENCE, Ky.) – The Thomas More University's baseball team scored 14 runs on their way to a 14-3 victory over IUPUC on Tuesday afternoon (March 14th). The Saints move to 13-10 overall on the season. 

 

• Graduate student Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky. / Simon Kenton) got the Saints started in the first inning with an RBI double to give the Saints an early lead. (1-0)
• Senior Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky. / Conner) hits a home run over the right field wall to score 2 more runs for the Saints in the first inning. (3-0)
• Sophomore Brennan Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio / Elder) grounds into a fielders choice, but gets another Saint's run across to make it a 4 run lead in the third inning. (4-1)
• IUPUC scores 3 runs in the top of the 4th to pull within a run. (4-3)
• Junior Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky. / Cooper) got the Saints started in the bottom half of the 4th inning with an RBI single. (5-3)
• Bailey Martin and Derek Atwood hit back to back doubles to score 2 more Saint runs. (7-3)
• Senior Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio / Rootstown) hits an RBI single to end the Saints 4th inning. (8-3)
• Sophomore Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) hit an RBI double in the 5th to extend the Saints lead. (9-3)
• Gavin Pearson and Bailey Martin each hit RBI singles, and Pearson scored on an error by the left fielder to score 3 more runs. (12-3)
• Derek Atwood hit an RBI single to push across another run. (13-3)
• Sophomore Tucker Gray (Williamstown, Ky. / Williamstown) hits a SAC fly to score another Thomas More run. (14-3)

 

• Bailey Martin went 3-3 at the plate with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, a walk, and 4 runs scored.
• Derek Atwood went 4-4 at the plate with a double, a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs.
• Gavin Vogelgesang went 2-4 at the plate with a double, a triple, a RBI and 2 runs scored.
• Gavin Pearson went 2-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored.

 
 

• Sophomore Jackson Grimmelsman (Cincinnati, Ohio / Elder) pitched 3.2 innings for the Saints, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits and striking out 3. He picked up the win.
• First year Ian Bierbaum (Cincinnati, Ohio / LaSalle) pitched 1.1 innings of shut out baseball, allowing only 1 hit.
• Senior Hunter Nantz (London, Ky. / North Laurel) pitched 1.0 innings of shut out baseball, striking out the side. 
• Fifth year Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio / LaSalle) pitched 1.0 innings of shut out baseball, striking out 2.

 

The Saints return to action against Lourdes tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Florence at Thomas More Stadium.
