Thomas More Falls to #16 Georgetown in Home Finale

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More University football team fell, 24-14, to 16th-ranked Georgetown College tonight (Friday, April 2, 2021) in a Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division game at BB&T Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

  • Thomas More took a 7-0 when first-year quarterback Blaine Espinosa (Cookeville, Tenn./Cookeville) connected on a 22-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Roques Dowdy (Athens, Ga./Oconee County) and junior place kicker Alexander Haley (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) added the point-after-attempt with 4:05 to play in the first quarter.

  • Georgetown tied the game at 7-7 with 7:55 to play in the second quarter when Darius Barbour scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Zach Dampier and Chris Cline added the PAT.
  • The Tigers led 14-0 at halftime after Dampier connected on a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jake Johnson and Cline added the PAT with 4:15 to play in the second quarter.

  • Chris Cline connected on a 29-yard field goal with 8:29 to play in the third quarter to increase the lead to 17-7.
  • Georgetown extended the lead to 24-7 when Marcus Omosule returned a fumble for a touchdown with 7:16 to play in the third quarter.

  • Thomas More closed out the scoring with 1:44 to play in the game when senior running back Monalo Caldwell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) scored on a one-year touchdown run and Haley added the PAT to make the score 24-14 in favor of the Tigers.

  • Thomas More falls to 2-4, while Georgetown improves to 5-1.
  • The Saints out-gained Georgetown 285 yards (47 rushing/238 passing) to 266 yards (28 rushing/238 passing.
  • Sophomore quarterback Jay Volpenhein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) was four-of-five passing for 76 yards and had four rushes for 24 yards.
  • Espinosa was 13-of-25 passing for 162 yards and one touchdown and had 10 rushes for six yards.
  • Senior wide receiver Charles Gaines (Elsmere, Ky./Lloyd Memorial) had four catches for 102 yards.
  • Senior wide receiver Silas Ingram (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) had three catches for 76 yards.
  • First-year defensive lineman Tanner Lawrence (Melbourne, Ky./Campbell County) had seven tackles (five solo/two assisted0, including two sacks.
  • Sophomore linebacker Del Thomas (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) had seven tackles (five solo/two assisted).
  • Junior linebacker Peyton Van Horn (Hebron, Ky./Conner) had seven tackles (three solo/four assisted), including a half tackle for a loss.

  • The Saints close out the 2020-21 season next Friday (April 9) when they travel to Williamsburg, Kentucky to play the University of the Cumberlands at 6 p.m.
