Box Score (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Thomas More College men's soccer team defeats Case Western Reserve University, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday (September 6, 2015) in a non-conference match at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
With the win, the Saints improve to 2-0 and with the loss, the Spartans fall to 2-1.
Case took an early 1-0 lead when Michael Balog scored at the 15:47 mark. Thomas More tied the match at 1-1 at the 16:51 mark when sophomore forward Eli Nienaber (LaGrange, Ky./Bishop Brossart) scored of an assist from senior forward Austin Juniet (Fort Thomas, Ky./Newport Central Catholic).
Jacob Grindel scored at the 59:25 mark to give the Spartans a 2-1 advantage. The Saints got the equalizer at the 65:33 mark when junior Matthew Spanyer (Lexington, Ky./Paul Dunbar) found the back of the net.
Thomas More won the match in the first overtime period when Juniet scored at the 95:32 mark.
Freshman goalkeeper Jeff Paulin (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) earned the win in goal as he played all 95:32 between the pipes and recorded three saves.
The Spartans out-shot Thomas More, 17-11, but the Saints owned an 8-5 advantage in shots-on-goal and 7-4 in corner kicks.
Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (September 9) when it travels to Columbus, Ohio to play Capital University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
